Melksham architecture firm secures third major design award

An architectural practice based in Melksham has won its third major industry award after being named design service of the year at a ceremony in Bristol.

Macey’s Architectural Design & Development Ltd (MADD) received the honour at the Corporate LiveWire Global Awards held at Ashton Gate Stadium in June.

Founded in 2024 by Ben Macey, the firm specialises in bespoke design, heritage refurbishments, new builds and extensions.

Recent projects include the redevelopment of redundant buildings into mixed-use schemes, flood-resilient residential designs, and heritage-led refurbishments.

We’re excited to welcome our newest team member, Tijan Sanno‑Berry, to MADD ✅

Tijan joins us as an Architectural Technologist and holds an honours degree in BSc Architectural Technology & Design, alongside recently completing his master's in MA Architecture - Building & Heritage Conservation. He brings a strong blend of technical capability, heritage sensitivity, and research‑led insight to the team.

His academic focus on conservation, detailing, and responsible design makes him an excellent fit for the work we deliver across the South-West and beyond - from heritage extensions, alterations and refurbishments to contemporary, compliance‑driven residential schemes.

Done something you shouldn’t have and received enforcement action? 😅

We’re pleased to share that retrospective planning permission and listed building consent have now been approved for the unauthorised works to this Grade II listed property in the heart of a conservation area.

This approval regularises a series of unauthorised sensitive heritage‑related changes, including removal of the unauthorised rear balcony and reinstatement of the correct dormer, retention of conservation‑style rooflights, retention of discreet solar panels on inner roof slopes, rear‑elevation construction variations that reduce heritage impact and retention of the attic conversion which was confirmed as reversible with no harm to historic fabric.

A positive, proportionate outcome for the clients and a great example of how thoughtful design, clear evidence, and heritage‑led justification can resolve even complex retrospective cases. Forum Heritage Services provided detailed heritage assessment throughout, and MADD are proud to have guided this process from assessment through to approval.

We’re delighted to confirm that full planning permission has been granted for the conversion of 27 Oakfield Road, located within the Whiteladies Road Conservation Area, transforming the former language school into a high‑quality six‑bedroom family home, with four bedrooms benefitting from their own ensuite.

The approved scheme delivers a contemporary, functional and character‑sensitive layout, including an open‑plan kitchen, living and dining space to the ground floor along with a dedicated office space, utility, cloakroom and snug/playroom. A full entertainment and relaxation basement featuring a kitchenette, entertainment/games space, w**e cellar, and sauna/spa suite. A new secure cycle shelter and dedicated bin store, designed to meet Bristol’s TDM standards and minimise visual impact within the Conservation Area.

A big thank you to RAW Planning Ltd for their expert planning consultancy and coordinated support throughout the application - a great collaborative effort.

With planning now secured, we are looking forward to progressing the project into the Building Regulations and Technical Design stages, ensuring the scheme is fully compliant, technically robust and ready for construction ✅

Progress Update: Leisure & Entertainment Suite Outbuilding Conversion 🏗️✨

A productive site visit today checking progress on the conversion of a former underutilised outbuilding at a private property in Wiltshire, soon to become the heart of a new leisure and entertainment suite.

With strip‑out underway and a section of the existing roof removed to facilitate installation of steels that will open up the space, several key items were reviewed and coordinated. This included assessing rotten floor joists and unstable brickwork, confirming fixings and installation methods for the proposed floor/wall/roof build‑ups, and checking all concrete pads ahead of steel delivery in the coming weeks.

Great to see the project moving from concept into construction with clarity, compliance and coordination at the forefront. This leisure suite - complete with bar, sauna, hot tub room and entertainment space - is shaping up to be a standout example of how thoughtful reuse and precise detailing can transform underutilised structures ✅

Solar Canopy Progress at Melksham Community Campus⚡

Another strong step forward on site today during our second visit in our role as Principal Designer. The full canopy structure is now standing proud with all steels and glulam installed, purlins nearing completion, and the PV mounting system well underway.

Safe operations were observed throughout, and momentum remains excellent with the works firmly on track.

Fantastic teamwork across the project as we bring this renewable upgrade to life for the community ✅

We’re pleased to share that Full Plans Building Control Approval has now been secured for the extension and alteration works to this Bristol property - marking another key step in delivering a more functional, spacious and future‑proof home for our clients.

This approval reflects the strength of the coordinated technical package developed for the scheme, including detailed plans, sections and elevations, robust structural and thermal integration, and clear, compliant detailing and specifications to support a smooth construction phase.

With the technical design now fully signed off, the project is ready to progress confidently towards the build - transforming the home with its open family kitchen, dedicated study, improved ground‑floor utility and WC, and upgraded principal suite with ensuite and walk‑in wardrobe.

Today's survey was carried out using a combination of digital surveying equipment and our drone to enable us to capture detailed information in those difficult-to-access locations ✅

We’re pleased to confirm that Full Plans Building Control Approval has now been secured for the proposed alteration works to this property in Broughton Gifford.

The scheme retains the existing stone plinth, while removing the outdated uPVC conservatory and replacing it with a beautifully detailed oak‑framed glazed extension - creating an authentic, comfortable light‑filled space that enhances the rear of the home.

At first floor level, the internal reconfiguration introduces an additional ensuite and family bathroom, improving functionality and future‑proofing the layout for modern living.
