Directional Drilling Delivers Efficient Network Upgrades.

At the start of this year one of our water teams completed a water mains rehabilitation on a 900m stretch of mains in St Bees, Cumbria, utilising the trenchless technique of directional drilling.

Working through challenging weather conditions, including persistent rain and strong winds, alongside difficult and rocky ground conditions, the team adopted a controlled and methodical approach to maintain both accuracy and safety throughout the project.

By carefully managing drilling speeds and pressures, and continuously monitoring ground conditions, the team was able to adapt in real time to ensure the successful installation of the new 90mm main. The use of trenchless techniques also minimised disruption to surrounding roads and neighbouring farmland, allowing the project to progress efficiently within the planned road closure.

The result: a high-quality installation, completed safely and ahead of programme, with minimal impact on the local environment.

Delivering essential upgrades to the water network in Liverpool.

This spring one of our water teams were out in the Wirral, Liverpool to successfully complete the installation and commissioning of a new Pressure Monitor Valve (PMV) system.

PMV’s have many benefits to the water network from helping to prevent damages to pipelines by being able to regulate the pressure automatically. As well as being able to control flow rates, reduce water leakage and ultimately lead to cost savings by reducing pump frequencies, lower consumption and fewer burst water mains occurring.

The team managed and completed a controlled excavation of the site, live mains integration and the construction of a purpose-built chamber around the PMV to enable easy access for system maintenance in the future.

The result: Completed safely and on time, the new system is now fully operational, supporting reliable pressure monitoring and long-term network performance.

132kV Terminal Structure Build & EHV Earthing Works in Nottinghamshire.

A few weeks ago, one of our teams wrapped work on site for the build of 132kV four-pole terminal structure in Newark.

Working with Sonnedix at the Winkburn Solar Farm within the National Grid Electricity Distribution Network (NGED), ready for NGED to undertake the non-contestable tower connection.

From assembling and dressing poles to installing foundations, establishing GS6 compliance, and constructing the full 132kV structure. Our teams worked efficiently, mobilising within a short window. Despite the team having a reduced working footprint with environmental sensitivities, working adjacent to live 132kV overhead lines and complex coordination requirements.

The result: all works were completed on time and within budget ready for NGED inspection, commissioning and final adoption, supporting a high performance grid connection.

Specialist 220kV Subsea Cable Jointing on the Gemini Offshore Transmission System

Our HV specialists recently supported in delivering precision 220kV subsea jointing works on the Gemini offshore transmission system, ensuring the long-term reliability and secure power export to shore.

This project required a team with both GWO offshore certification and product specific technical training to deliver this jointing work in a complex subsea environment. To ensure that there was long-term mechanical, electrical and environmental resilience within the joints to withstand the harsh offshore conditions.

The result: successful completion of all 220kV subsea joints with verified electrical integrity, aligned with NKT’s safety, quality and offshore operational standards.

It’s a great example of our capability to deliver high‑voltage subsea works safely, confidently and to exacting international standards.

We're pleased to share SSEN Distribution's announcement of their overhead line framework, as one of the four framework partners.

This framework is set to provide around £300m of investment to renew, strengthen and future-proof the overhead electricity network over the initial five years, in local communities across the north of Scotland.

We're proud to be continuing to build our strong relationship with SSEN Distribution, following our past storm response work and looking forward to delivering these essential upgrades safely, efficiently and to the highest standard.

Life as a 33kV Cable Jointer

We recently caught up with Harry Branthwaite, one of our 33kV Cable Jointers, currently working on a site in the West Midlands, to get an inside look at the role.

Cable jointers play a vital role in connecting energy infrastructure, linking the grid to wind farms, both onshore and offshore, as well as maintaining underground connections.

“Every joint and termination is a potential weak spot within the system, so it’s our job to install it like it isn’t there.”

We’re proud to have supported a community volunteering project in Ellon, Scotland, by donating paint and decorating materials to help transform a home for adults with additional needs.

Working alongside National Gas, volunteers redecorated the property to create a brighter, more welcoming living space for its residents.

A small contribution, but one that makes a real difference 💙
