Struggling to fill a open role? It might not be a talent shortage - it could be your job description! 📋

Outdated or overly rigid job requirements often exclude exceptional candidates before they even have a chance to apply. That’s where Job Crafting comes in:

- Focus on core duties: Review and update job descriptions with accessibility in mind, stripping away unnecessary or outdated requirements.
- Look for flexibility: Ask whether requirements like a driving licence or strict working hours are genuinely essential, or if certain tasks can be adapted.
- Value transferable skills: Focus on underlying competencies rather than strict job titles or traditional qualifications - those sought-after skills might be more common in a different sector!
- Be realistic: Job crafting isn't about removing core business needs; it's about opening doors to a wider, untapped talent pool.

At Patchwork Hub, we help employers rethink talent acquisition and build truly inclusive workplaces. Beyond our popular Recruitment Review service, we can support your organisation with:
- Job Board Posting: Reach a diverse network of skilled candidates, including disabled professionals, caregivers, and remote workers looking for their next career opportunity.
- Consulting and Training: Get expert guidance for your hiring managers and HR teams to audit your end-to-end recruitment process and ensure your hiring pipelines aren’t inadvertently excluding the best talent for the job.

Think working in the public sector means low wages, bureaucracy and stress? There’s more to the sector than you might think.

From the Shetlands to the Scillies, public sector organisations help keep all kinds of services, communities and systems running. They're the biggest employers in the country and have links to almost any industry you can think of.

If you want to make a difference in your community, but front line services aren't where your skills or interests lie, there’s room for you.

We’ve recently advertised public sector opportunities on Patchwork Hub covering a wide range of careers, including archaeology, accountancy, and AI development.

And you definitely don't need to be highly qualified.

While senior and specialist roles might require specific qualifications or experience, you don’t have to be an expert to get a foot in the door. The Civil Service in particular values transferable skills and offers opportunities to learn and develop. Not to mention the chance to earn while you learn - there is no upper age limit on most apprenticeships!

But what about accessibility and adjustments?

Some public sector roles, especially in Health and Education, can have a reputation for being physically and mentally demanding, with long hours. That can create barriers, particularly if you have limited energy, mobility or cognitive capacity.

But roles and working environments vary hugely. Depending on the role and organisation, flexible hours, remote or hybrid working, or a more predictable workload could make a difference. There’s even shift work and night work if you prefer anything but the 9 to 5.

Staff networks and unions can also offer advice and support when requesting adjustments or navigating barriers at work.

The important thing is finding a role and working environment that works for you.

So, could a public sector career be worth exploring?

It’s and !

We often talk about "good work," but what does it mean in practice?

At Patchwork Hub, our view is simple: good work is work that fits into your life, not the other way around. It means:
• True accessibility in hiring and day-to-day tasks.
• Flexible and remote working options that honor health, well-being, and care responsibilities
• Supportive workplace cultures where neurodivergent and disabled talent can truly thrive

Whether it's flexible hours, a genuinely inclusive team culture, or clear communication - what does good work look like for YOU?
