A 12kW system built for a complex, multi-pitched roofline: 28 UKSOL 460W panels, a Fox ESS H3 Smart Hybrid Inverter, and 23.04kWh of Fox battery storage across two units.

An Eddi immersion controller sits alongside it, routing excess generation straight into the building's hot water rather than letting it go to waste.

Every panel is fixed and wired to the same standard regardless of angle or access. Clean cable runs, consistent brackets, and properly weatherproofed roof penetrations throughout. The kind of detail that keeps a system trouble-free for years rather than needing a call-back six months in.

That is how a properly designed home energy system works.

Generate it: your solar panels produce electricity during the day from a source that costs nothing and never runs out.

Store it: whatever your home does not use immediately goes into a battery rather than being exported to the grid at a low rate.

One of the most common questions we get asked is whether a roof is actually suitable for solar.

The honest answer is that most are. But the details matter more than people realise.

Orientation makes the biggest difference. South-facing roofs are ideal, but east- and west-facing roofs still perform well and deliver a solid return. North-facing with heavy shading is the one scenario where the numbers rarely stack up.

Roof condition and structure matter too. A survey identifies any issues before a system is specified, not after. And the system size needs to match how the building actually uses energy, not just the maximum number of panels the roof can carry.

The only way to get a reliable answer for your specific property is a site assessment. We carry one out before any quote is produced, and we will tell you honestly if the case is not strong enough to justify the investment.

Myth: Solar panels do not work well in the UK because of the weather.

Reality: the UK receives enough solar irradiation to make commercial solar a financially sound investment across most of the country. Solar panels generate from daylight, not direct sunshine. Overcast days still produce generation, at reduced output, but consistently.

The performance of a UK commercial solar system depends far more on system design and orientation than on cloud cover.

A well-designed system on a south-facing commercial roof will generate enough to make a meaningful reduction in grid dependency for most commercial buildings.

The weather is not a barrier. Poorly designed systems are.
