Compost bin advice needed!

We are finally looking at getting a proper compost bin for the garden, but now I’m unsure which is best -
Plastic or wooden?

I’d love to hear what works for you — what would you recommend, and is there anything you’d avoid?

Even better… show me pictures of your working composters!

There is nothing nicer than the smell of wild garlic. I've been given some bulbs, when is it best to plant, where, and how do I keep it manageable?

I am frustrated by the black spot on my roses since the wetter weather has arrived.
What is the best course of action to help?

“I absolutely love autumn because with autumn comes conkers — glossy, chestnut treasures, cool and smooth in your hand. So simple, so tactile, and somehow impossible to walk past.”

Welcome to Copper Beeches: Me, My Garden and My Quirks.
I suppose it’s time to introduce the person behind all this nonsense. I’m Kaz, and I have a perfectly ordinary garden. Well… it would be, if I could leave anything alone.

Things simply arrive at Copper Beeches and promptly develop personalities. As you can see in the picture, my imagination tends to run away with me!
Here are a few of the characters you'll meet around here: Pumpy McTrough: My trusty water pump.
Lord Tubs: A discarded tub turned water feature, currently awaiting local frogs, toads, and dragonflies.
Prof Humus: A chimney pot that somehow found itself part of the story, keeping a watchful eye over the trowels.
Neville’s Throne & Ol’ Basket Case: A regal bench and an old cast-iron fireplace standing proudly among the borders.
I love the slightly battered, the overlooked, and the delightfully out-of-place. Give me a peculiar corner, a plant in need of rescuing, or an object with no sensible reason to be in a border, and my imagination gets to work.
The Voice of Reason (Sort Of)My husband, CC — Captain Chaos — watches these schemes unfold with a mix of tolerance, suspicion, and the occasional firm “No.” (Which I usually interpret as “give me a little time to come round to it.").
What to Expect Here at Copper Beeches isn’t a pristine show garden. It isn't immaculate. There are weeds, unfinished projects, plants being relocated for the third time, and corners where nature completely ignored my plans and did something better.
Gardening, for me, is about stories, memories, wildlife, ridiculous ideas, and finding wonder in ordinary things.
If you’re looking for expert perfection, you’ve taken a wrong turn. But if you like gardens with character, objects with names, and a constant battle of wills with Captain Chaos… Welcome to Copper Beeches. You’ll fit right in.

Over to you: I do wonder if I'm the only person ever to name her garden objects... Please tell me I'm not alone! Do any of your garden plants or features have names or secret backstories? Let me know in the comments below!

My old chimney has been sitting quietly in the garden for a while now, and with autumn setting in and composting on my mind, I’ve decided he may need a new identity — Professor Humus.

If this old chimney ever gets promoted to composting duties, I think the name may already be decided.

Composting is a project I’d really like to try at Copper Beeches, but I’m curious — do you find a compost bin genuinely useful, or does it become a five-day wonder before enthusiasm disappears?

And how do you manage yours through the cooler months, when the garden is quieter and everything seems to slow down?

Any tips for a complete composting novice?

My yucca has produced this magnificent flower spike — and here’s something I didn’t know: yuccas can wait several years before flowering, but when they do, they certainly don’t do it in style!
Beautiful when it flowers. Absolutely vicious the other 364 days of the year.

I'd love to see pictures of your yukka flowering.

The Old Fire Basket travelled thirty-nine steps to settle into a new shady spot, with a view towards the gazebo.

His summer spectacular display has gone now autumn has arrived. Beneath the grey skies, his colourful surroundings are beginning to fade, and summer’s last flowers are quietly slipping away.

The Old Fire Basket needs a new focus for the months ahead.

Any ideas for how we might give him a fresh lease of life?
