Not every lift needs to be a massive one.

Smaller pump installations still require careful planning, control and precision to make sure everything is positioned exactly where it needs to be.

Another successful multi-unit substation fit-out completed by the Riglift team.

This project involved the delivery and installation of a transformer, ring main unit (RMU), two LV boards and ancillary equipment into a confined substation environment.

Using sleepers and packing timbers to create a stable rolling route, the team moved each unit into position before using hydraulic jacks for accurate final placement onto the foundations.

Careful sequencing was key throughout the operation, ensuring each unit could be installed safely and efficiently without restricting access for the next.

Project Spotlight | Electrical Panel De-oiling

Oil-filled electrical equipment has to be handled carefully at end of life, with the oil removed and contained before the equipment can be safely separated and moved.

Working alongside the client’s engineers, the Riglift team managed the complete sequence — draining and capturing the dielectric oil using specialist de-oiling equipment, separating the panel sections and preparing them for controlled removal by lorry loader.

The panels were successfully de-oiled, separated and removed from site while maintaining environmental control throughout the operation.

Another example of how careful sequencing, the right equipment and experienced handling can make technically demanding plant removal safer and more efficient.

Project Spotlight | Electrical Substation Fit-Out

A transformer, ring main unit (RMU) and LV cabinet needed to be installed inside an electrical substation — but the route to the final positions presented a number of access and handling challenges.

The only route into the plant room was via a steep ramp. Because of the transformer’s weight, allowing the unit to move under gravity was not an option. Riglift used a Tirfor wire rope winch to maintain tension and control throughout the descent.

Once at the base of the ramp, all three units needed to be raised to a specific height before they could clear the substation entrance threshold.

With limited space for conventional lifting equipment, the team used hydraulic jacks and timber packing to progressively raise each unit before transferring them onto transformer wheels and skates for final positioning.

The transformer, RMU and LV cabinet were successfully installed and positioned without incident.

This project highlights the importance of adapting lifting and handling methods around the actual access conditions — particularly where steep gradients, restricted entrances and confined working areas rule out standard solutions.

Project Spotlight | Air Plant Installation

A temporary compressed air plant needed to be delivered into a basement plant room — but the route to the final position presented several access challenges.

The compressor unit and air receiver had to be moved through a congested loading bay, down a ramp and into the building’s goods lift before reaching the plant room.

Because of the air receiver’s extended footprint, a standard pallet truck wasn’t suitable for the full route. Riglift specified a long-base pallet truck to maintain stability and control through the changes in gradient and direction.

The compressor unit and air receiver were successfully delivered and positioned in their final locations without incident.

This project highlights the importance of assessing the complete access route before mobilisation and selecting handling equipment around the actual site conditions rather than relying on standard kit.

Rig Lift (UK) Limited is looking for an experienced Class 2 HIAB Driver to join our close-knit machine moving team in Dartford, Kent.

If you’re looking for varied work where no two days are quite the same, this could be a great fit.

We’re looking for someone with:

• Class 2 HGV licence
• A professional and reliable approach
• Good problem-solving skills
• Minimum age of 25
• ALLMI/CPCS Unlimited is an advantage — training can be provided

This is a full-time role, 5 days a week, with weekend work also available.

You’ll be involved in a range of lifting, transport and machine-moving projects across the UK.

PROJECT SPOTLIGHT | Weight-Limited Substation Installation

A statutory weight restriction meant the normal delivery vehicle couldn't access this substation — so the installation required a different approach.

Riglift used a tracked carrier to transport the transformer across the weight-restricted area before a spider crane was used to position and install the equipment.

With pedestrian access to the site remaining operational and open water immediately adjacent to the working area, careful planning and site management were just as important as the lifting equipment itself.

The transformer, ACB and ancillary components were successfully installed within the site's weight restrictions while maintaining operational safety throughout.
