Would you turn your alarm off and let an intruder have free reign of your property? Probably not, but sadly we are starting to see this happen, admittedly in small numbers, but its happening. Imagine, you have gone out for the day, or gone out for dinner, as most alarm systems installed within the last few years have an ‘App’ facility’, you get an alert on your phone that your alarm has activated. What do you do? You probably think it is a false alarm and switch it off, when in actual fact an intruder has broken in, you have switched your alarm off from your App and they now have completely free and undisturbed freedom around your home – how many times have you done this?

Let’s hope you don’t do this, but if you are notified by your App that your system has activated what are you going to do about it? Call the Police? – as per the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC)Security systems policy (please click this link) unless you have an Intruder alarm installed by a company whose installations are approved by either the NSI/NACOSS or SSAIB your system is classed as a type B system – please refer to page 13 of the policy section 3.6 the Police will not attend the activation unless there is ‘evidence from a person at the scene that a criminal offence is in Progress’ – therefore you or others looking at CCTV cameras does not count. Don’t take my word for it – read the policy.

For the avoidance of doubt, unless their evidence from a person at the scene (I.e.. A neighbour standing outside your house seeking the intrusion in progress that a criminal offence is in progress the Police will not attend unless the Police are called from an Alarm Receiving Centre via an approved alarm company.

You may say ‘the Police don’t come to alarms anyway’ – you are wrong, as per the Police policy (Page 19) the Police aim to attend urgent (Level 1) calls from Intruder Alarms within 8 – 10 minutes depending on the Police force your property resides in.

Why am I writing this? So that YOU are correctly informed and that you know what you are getting for your hard-earned money – we are seeing so much mis-selling at this time – its everyone’s choice as to how they protect themselves so long as you get what you think you are getting.
