“A smart city is a city that has developed some technological infrastructure that enables it to collect, aggregate and analyze real-time data and has made a concerted effort to use that data to improve the lives of its residents,” (National League of Cities)

While cities of flying cars and robot overlords may be a far cry from the present day, smart cities are not. Will they be the way of the future?

"We shape our buildings and afterwards our buildings shape us,” mused Winston Churchill in 1943 while considering the repair of the bomb-ravaged House of Commons.
More than 70 years on, he would doubtless be pleased to learn that neuroscientists and psychologists have found plenty of evidence to back him up.

As more of us flock to urban living, city designers are re-thinking buildings’ influence on our moods in an era of “neuro-architecture”.

Construction workers face some great dangers on a daily basis at work, with many potential hazards which can cause serious injury and even death. This is why it is crucial that workers wear the appropriate workwear – a responsibility which lies with both the company and the individual.

Work wear proves vital for the safety of construction workers

MIT researchers have designed a system that can 3-D print the basic structure of an entire building. The system consists of a tracked vehicle that carries a large industrial robotic arm, which has a smaller, precision-motion robotic arm at its end.

Researchers have developed a system that can 3-D print the basic structure of an entire building.

A Chinese construction company claimed itself to be the world's fastest builder after erecting a 57-storey skyscraper in just 19 working days. The company, which specializes in prefabricated construction, prepared 90 percent of the structure at the factory before the site work began and then assembled the remaining 10 percent structure like a jigsaw puzzle at the site.

China’s fast-paced construction companies build skyscrapers in as little as two weeks. But are the foundations of these buildings on shaky ground?

"The world’s tallest moving observation tower, British Airways i360, will open to the public this Thursday, August 4th. Designed by Marks Barfield Architects, the firm behind the iconic London Eye, the i360 tower will transport 200 visitors at a time up 138 meters to take in views of the city of Brighton and Hove, the Sussex coast and the English Channel. With a height to width ratio of more than 40:1, the structure was also designated as the most slender tower in the world by the Guinness Book of World Records after topping out in February."

Time will tell how this momentous decision will impact on businesses. But entrepreneurs tend to be both optimistic and opportunistic – they rarely wait for macro-economic data before making a decision.

Uncertainty is unlikely to sit well with entrepreneurs and business lobbies are already calling for action

LED bulbs have a much longer life span, lasting an average of 50,000 hours, while a halogen lightbulb might only last 1,000-2,000 hours. In addition to saving money on the lightbulbs themselves, switching to longer lasting bulbs reduces labor, since they need changing much less frequently. With 20 million bulbs earmarked for replacement, India is hoping to reduce the annual power load by 10.5 billion kWh, translating into a financi

India has announced a two-year goal to replace 20 million streetlights with LED bulbs, as part of a larger energy efficiency program.

Researchers at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden developed the material, which they say is suitable for mass production. The transparent wood could be used to build houses that let in more natural light, thus cutting your electric bill. Their findings were published in the American Chemical Society journal, Biomacromolecules.

Wood is a great material because it’s cheap, renewable, and versatile. But this crazy transparent wood that scientists in Sweden brewed up is nuts. It could replace glass for some seriously eye-catching architecture, and even be used in cheap solar panels or windows.
