Own a protected building in Guernsey?

If your windows are draughty, decaying or no longer fit for modern living, the updated CN11 guidance may offer a more practical route forward.

SOUP Architects can help you understand what is possible and prepare a clear, sensitive and well-evidenced planning case.

Updated heritage guidance gives homeowners more flexibility on windows and doors. Guernsey’s updated Conservation Advice Note 11: Windows and Doors in Protected Buildings, published in April 2026, is a welcome and important step forward for owners of protected properties.

What time is it? That's right, it's opinion time. As we all head down to the beach this weekend, have a little think about the untapped potential of this amazing civic resource and tell us your thoughts.

As the island turns west for sea air, sunsets and a Bank Holiday reset, it feels like the right moment to ask: are we making the most of Guernsey’s most spectacular coastline?

We are pleased to share details on a Planning Submission we have made for a new self-build house.

Located on the edge of a market town in East Suffolk, our proposals for a new 3-bed low-energy, low-carbon family house, set on a gently sloped site, will provide views out across the adjoining rural fields and distant views of the townscape to the north.

The house layout works around all of the retained trees on the site, with the main living areas opening out to a private garden to the west, maximising sunlight/daylight to these spaces year-round.

The garage links to the house via a covered link, with a south-facing mono-pitch roof providing the optimum location for a PV array that will provide 7.3 kWp of electricity.

We look forward to it progressing through planning and into construction.

We are pleased to share photos from a recent SOUP project near Aldeburgh in Suffolk.

Calluna lies along the Suffolk coastal landscape, close to beautiful beaches, north of Aldeburgh. RSPB North Warren is to the east of the house, and Hazlewood Marshes are to the west.

Transformation of 1970’s modernism

Our brief was to refurbish the existing house and convert the existing double garage into the Main Bedroom, forming a separate western wing to the main house. To create this, the existing external, covered link corridor was enclosed with a glazed wall to create a hallway link to the garage conversion.

Important to the project was the retention of the original charm and modernist qualities of the 1970’s house, which was achieved by working alongside the clients and Interior Designer, Michele Barker.

The photos were kindly shared by The Modern House who currently has the property up for sale, if anyone is interested:

From initial sketch to Planning success!!!

Approval received for redeveloping an existing house in Mistley, Essex.

The existing 3-bed (1no box room) house will be transformed into a 4 double bedroom house with extended Living Spaces connecting more fluidly with the angled rear garden to maximise afternoon and evening light into the house.

Thanks to Tendring District Council for their support.

Scaffold drop on our Grade II Listed Former Bury St Edmunds Courthouse project.

All the stonework and brickwork has been meticulously cleaned and existing windows refurbished on the 1904 building. The conversion works to create 6 generous residential units continues apace internally with the creation of two internal courtyards bringing more natural light into the heart of the site. The reworking of the two main courts within the older courthouse building to the south will create two beautiful open plans homes filled with natural light from the refurbished roof lanterns above.

More photos to follow as works progress and internal scaffolding comes down.

SOUP Architects is starting 2026 with real optimism.

Looking back, we’re most grateful for the conversations, the ones that begin with “we’re not quite sure what we need…” and end with a clear brief, a strong concept, and a plan everyone believes in.

Our best work still starts the same way: listening properly, asking better questions, sketching quickly, testing ideas, and then refining until the design feels inevitable.

In 2026 we’re keeping our focus on what we enjoy most:

> Design-led thinking: bold ideas, calmly resolved
> Curiosity and collaboration: the good kind of back-and-forth
> Character and craft: especially in older and protected buildings
> Comfort and performance: fabric-first, without losing the joy of space, light and materiality
> The small details: the ones that quietly make a building feel “right”

Here’s to a year of thoughtful briefs, generous clients, brilliant teams, and plenty of good drawings.

Wishing everyone a calm, creative and constructive 2026.

The Plan No05

Continuing our Plans Series, we are delighted to share our Hillyard Mews scheme that received planning consent last year for the redevelopment of a disused set of garages in Lambeth, South London. The approved proposals will create two, adjoined dual-aspect townhouses, stretched over 3 floors.

The tight site sits behind a terrace of mid-century houses to the south, a communal garden that serves mansion blocks to the north and east, and a terrace of Georgian houses to the west, including a listed building, famous for once being the home of Vincent van Gogh.

The scheme utilises the existing vehicular access from the south to form a new, landscaped shared entrance, leading to individual front doors to each house. Both units have integrated basements, with private external courtyards, dual aspect living spaces on the Ground Floor, linking out to private garden spaces to the north, and set-back bedrooms on the First Floor.

Referencing the brickwork of the Georgian houses to the west and the rich red tones of the mansion blocks to the east, the proposed buildings take further reference from their locality. Christ Church, located nearby on Brixton Road, is a Grade 2* Listed Building designed by Local Architect Beresford Pite in a Byzantine style with alternating brick patterns of tone that create a rhythmic play of colour/shade. This has been incorporated into our proposals to create a series of facades reminiscent of Pite’s eclectic style.
