Formal structure meets cottage romanticism in Kate's latest design. A tightly clipped hedge and pond holding the structure while the border knits together.
That's the whole job: a clipped hedge and circular pond give this Bromley garden its bones, then the border in front is left to run loose — salvias, nepetas, and Erigeron flowing over. The pergola echoes the same clean lines as the pond, so the eye moves from hard landscaping into planting without a jolt.
Get that balance wrong either way and a garden stops working. Too formal, it's stiff. Too loose, it's unplanned.
