With large cavities at the base and leaning toward the footpath, this Willow was condemned for removal. In these situations Salter Trees will always try to guide our customers toward leaving the tree as a Monolith like this.
Monolith trees create a specialised deadwood habitat that supports the following rich community of species.
● Nesting and roosting sites for birds such as woodpeckers, owls, and nuthatches, and for bats which use cracks and cavities.
● Deadwood invertebrate habitat - beetles, hoverflies, and other insects that depend on decaying wood. Some of these are rare and highly specialised.
● Fungi, lichens, mosses and liverworts.
Because the monolith remains upright, it offers vertical habitat diversity - sunny, shaded, damp, and dry microclimates all in one structure - none of which would be available if this tree had been removed to ground level and processed for firewood.
