Haystacks Experiments: Alpaca 4

Oil Pastel on Paper

15 x 21.1cm

This is the final edition to the Haystacks series for now. In this one, the alpaca is surrounded by golden evening sunlight, just before sunset. I love how this one reveals the golden tones in the alpaca's fur!

Haystacks Experiments: Alpaca 3

Oil Pastel on Paper

14.9 x 22cm

This is the third piece in the Haystacks series, this time depicting a winter morning light. I think this might be my favourite yet. It's seemed to give the alpaca extra character as he angrily confronts the camera about being trapped outside in the frost!

Untitled Life Drawing

Charcoal on Newsprint

50 x 74.9cm

I made this drawing in the first life class of this academic year. I was so happy with it, considering I'd been off all summer! I love the layering of the forms and the multi-angle point of views, so I'm hoping to be able to explore this more soon.

14.8 x 21cm

This is the second piece from my Haystacks-inspired series, using sunset lighting with lots of deep warm tones. More to come!

NML Artefact: Iridescent Bird

Oil Pastel on Paper

29.7 x 21cm

This drawing originated in a still life session at the World Museum in Liverpool but was admittedly finished afterwards with a photo reference. Fate found me sat in front of a stuffed iridescent bird illuminated by the afternoon daylight, perched delicately on a branch. I had recently been researching optical phenomena, and this was the perfect place to begin exploring this in situ. This drawing marks the beginning of a practical investigation into these phenomena, and how they appear and change between the camera and the human eye.

Haystacks Experiments: Alpaca 1

Oil pastel on paper

14.9 x 21cm

This is the first of a short series of works inspired by Monet's Haystacks. I'm having loads of fun exploring optical phenomena and how light affects the colours we see. I'm also loving using oil pastels with their vibrant colours! There's much more to come from this series but, for now, swipe for the funny alpaca reference! 🦙

Spiaggia delle Mortelle at Sunset

Acrylic on Paper

42 x 29.5 cm

I have always been inspired by sunset views yet often feel guilty about using such ‘cliche’ imagery in my work. This piece was a first real attempt to explore this interest in depth and confront the ‘pretty landscape’ stereotype. I painted largely from memory and used a sketch I had made whilst on the beach itself as reference. The result focuses more on the vivid colours and dramatic skyscape that characterise my memory of the scene than an accurate depiction. The water highlights are accompanied by the visual colour effects of looking at bright light, creating a scene that begins to explore the connection between human sight and long-term cognitive image processing.

LCC Evenings

Acrylic on Canvas

101.6 x 81.3 cm

This painting was created for an art competition at Liverpool Cricket Club, where I have been playing for two years. In response to the prompt ‘what does LCC mean to you?’, the painting depicts a scene that characterises the club for me- the vibrant top ground grass with the iconic clubhouse, complete with a player and obligatory furry mascot! The work was largely completed using a palette knife, which created a process whereby I feel as if I am sculpting the scene, leaving transitory and somewhat vague marks that reflect my morphing memories and experiences of the club. I am not interested in creating realistic depictions, more so in investigating knowledge and memories of places, combined with the idea of the wonderful spectacle.
