Such a beautiful location on the shores of Loch Carron for this glorious garden in the Highlands . We loved our visit, from the wee fernery to the magnificent rhododendrons, and of course the DIY cafe. The garden is adjacent to a railway station which some of our party used to travel onwards to Inverness for the sleeper train. The novelty of putting your hand out to request a train to stop never gets old!

There was lots of spring and evergreen interest in the courtyard garden I designed in Linlithgow when I was back there recently.

I love the way the new growth pops against the black fence.

I was back last week to check on this courtyard garden in Linlithgow which I completed last September. As work came to a close last year the rain began - hence the photos with the grainy effect! Many thanks to the client for sending photos through around that time without the rain!

The challenge here was to make the space feel like a garden when it was nearly all existing hard landscaping. The client wanted a soft natural look with lots of green in their courtyard rather than anything formal or traditional. Large containers provide plenty of growing room and impact. A number of slightly smaller ones on the lower level allow the client to move them about to make space for the pending BBQ and pizza oven.

The planting choices are perennial rather than traditional bedding plants. This is more sustainable and means the plants won't need continual replacement. It also allows for a softer, more natural look. Yes there is still a lot of work involved because the plants need feeding (as well as watering), growing media will need renewing and perennials will need to be lifted and divided every few years. The trees and shrubs have been selected for large pots and being containerised will also slow their growth. The lightweight carbon fibre pots keep the weight reduced on the deck, as does careful addition of the right growing media.

The raised bed at the rear of the garden has its own challenges with difficult growing conditions. In addition creating a space in a long narrow bed that doesn't feel very regimented is tricky. There are a number of evergreens throughout to maintain structure and interest through the winter months, but not too many in order to avoid a space that feels static.

Rather incredibly the Bernina Express is included on the Interrail pass. What a spectacular journey - a UNESCO World Heritage route - from Tirano in Italy to Chur in Switzerland. It travels across 196 bridges, through 55 tunnels and climbs about 1,800 m to reach its highest point of 2,253m.

It was an atmospheric autumnal day when we made the journey and I loved seeing the deciduous conifer forests of European Larch in all their golden autumnal glory. It's hard to do justice to the journey with photos through the train window but if you have a minute to watch the video there are some beautiful views revealed!

What a great way to travel! A mini European tour on Interrail passes fitted into autumn half term break. 5 countries, 27 trains including 1 sleeper (Basel to Amsterdam), 9 metros, 3 trams, 6 ferries and 9 days.

Storm Amy was looming overhead when I took these photos but these beds were still full of autumn colour. I particularly love the combination of the persicaria, Gillenia trifoliata and epimedium in the first photo.

These are two borders that were planted up last September for a client and the first 4 photos show the beds at the end of this September. The middle photos are from July of this year and the last two are from planting out in September 2025.

The borders are the first step in the replanting of the whole garden which is being done in stages.

There's treasure everywhere in this garden.

As building works were undertaken over the last year a large number of bricks and clay pavers were discovered on site buried in the soil and hidden under years of undergrowth. Even when Mario and team began work just over a week ago, they were still turning up characterful old bricks, this time buried in the lawn.

Alot of these are local bricks and it's lovely to be able to reuse them on site. They are a really important part of the design I've done for this garden. Not only is it more sustainable to use them, but they feel integral to the site's heritage and its sense of place.

Some of the bricks are being reused as edging where we are also mixing in the surplus new ones left over from the build so nothing is wasted. Some are being used to create inset areas in the gravel as a feature. Others which are too damaged are being used to fill a gabion basket bench.

A very productive day on site selecting and sorting, and creating the layouts. And all around me continued to make amazing progress!

It's really exciting to have started on site with the landscaping for the redesign of a garden in Larbert. It's a special place and has many memories for the current owners.

It was a much loved garden but had become extremely overgrown with large areas of dead shrubs covered in climbers, a bumpy lawn full of huge cherry roots, overcrowded planting, and several areas that were simply inaccessible.

The redesign will incorporate elements of what the client loves from the former space and make it more manageable for them instead of being faced with inpenetrable thickets. It will also encourage them to enjoy all areas of the garden as well as looking beautiful from their stunning new extension to the 1930s house.

We've rescued a huge number of perennials and small shrubs prior to beginning on site so they can be replanted in the garden at the end of landscaping works. We're also reusing concrete slabs from the old patio and incorporating lots of fantastic old bricks found on site in the design.

These pictures show the garden after the extension was built and prior to garden landscaping works - in progress photos to come!

Delighted to be working with landscaper for this lovely project.
