🌿One of my favourite places at Fullbrook Nursery....

If there's one area of the nursery I never get tired of walking through, it's our topiary and specimen plant tunnels.

The shapes, colours, sizes and sheer variety of plants never fail to impress me.

Much of our topiary and specimen stock comes from specialist growers in Italy and with new deliveries arriving regularly, there's always something different to discover.

From beautifully shaped topiary to striking architectural evergreens and unusual specimens, it's an area that's constantly changing.

What I particularly love is the difference these plants can make to a landscape.

A carefully chosen specimen can completely transform a space, whether it's creating a focal point in a show home garden, framing an entrance or bringing structure and year-round interest to a commercial landscaping project.

And sometimes it's that one unusual plant that really makes a scheme stand out.

With our range constantly evolving, there's always a good reason for me to take another walk through the tunnels. Not that I ever need much persuading!

Over to Simon 🌿

"My career in horticulture started a little later than most.

As a teenager, I spent many school holidays working at Bentley’s, a local rose and fruit farm. I loved working outdoors and thought horticulture might be where my future lay.

But life had other ideas!

Instead, I spent 25 years in the printing industry, working for a family-owned business where I learnt a great deal and built some fantastic relationships.
Then, in February 2020, the company went into administration, and I found myself facing redundancy and the prospect of starting again.

Having always been a keen gardener, I took the opportunity to join a local nursery, run by an old school friend.

Over the next five years, I worked across virtually every area of the nursery, from growing and production to logistics and sales. Along the way, I gained invaluable experience and built relationships with growers and suppliers across the UK and Europe.

My next move took me to a nursery in Nottingham, where I particularly enjoyed getting out on landscaping sites and helping plant the trees and shrubs we supplied. Seeing the process from nursery to planting gave me a better understanding of the challenges customers face.

In January 2026, I joined Fullbrook Nursery, a growing business with a great team and exciting plans for the future.

What I enjoy most is the variety. One day I'm sourcing specialist trees for a commercial project, the next I'm discussing planting ideas with a garden designer or helping find alternatives to difficult specifications.

For me, it's about more than selling plants. It's about understanding customers' needs, finding solutions and building lasting relationships.

I'm also studying towards my RHS Level 2 qualification, as there's always something new to learn in horticulture.

Six years on, I genuinely love what I do and feel incredibly lucky to work in an industry that I'm just as passionate about outside working hours.

I'm grateful to everyone who's helped me along the way and excited about what lies ahead with Fullbrook Nursery.

If there's one thing I've learnt, it's that you're never too old to start again and find a career you truly enjoy."

Not all the schemes I get involved with are at ground level!

A couple of years ago I was involved with a rooftop garden project which certainly came with its challenges.

The client's vision was to create a natural, calming space where city workers could enjoy a well-earned break, while also creating a habitat for wildlife.

The planting needed to provide year-round interest and be relatively low maintenance. But because of the loading capacity of the roof, soil depth was minimal, which limited both the range and size of plants we could use.

It meant choosing plants carefully.

The designer used a soft palette of perennials including Achillea, Erigeron Karvinskianus, Alchemilla Mollis and Echinacea, mixed with lavender and herbs around the pathways and seating areas.

Grasses including Stipa Tenuissima and Stipa Arundinacea added movement, texture and structure, while Buddleias from the compact Butterfly Candy range helped us meet the biodiversity brief without taking over the space.

Bergenia and Ajuga provided early nectar for emerging bees and other pollinators, while lower-growing Hebes and Euonymus gave structure and interest throughout the year.

The end result was fantastic.

Projects like this are a good reminder that plant supply isn't always straightforward. Sometimes you're working with limited soil depth, restricted sizes, maintenance requirements and an environmental brief, but you still need to achieve what the designer set out to create.

For me, the most satisfying part was knowing we'd help create a space that would enhance the lives of the people working in that urban environment.

Fleur takes over 🌱

My career in horticulture began many years ago...

I've had a love of plants and all things outdoors for as far back as I can remember.

After leaving school, I decided A Levels and university wasn't for me, so I got a job with a local landscape gardener. I spent two very happy years doing everything from laying slabs and mowing grass to everything in between!

I knew I wanted to take my career further and gain a formal qualification, which led me to Pershore College of Horticulture and a three-year National Diploma in Hardy Nursery Stock Production.

As part of the course, I spent a year at Blakedown Nurseries, working in every department from propagation through to despatch, I even had a two-month stint in garden centre sales, which I absolutely loved.

After finishing at Pershore with a Distinction, I was offered a job back at Blakedown as a buyer working within the Amenity Sales department. I spent 10 years there and gained a huge amount of experience, including travelling across the UK and Europe visiting the company's supplier network.

When Blakedown went into administration, I moved to Bonnigale Nurseries and spent the next 22 years in sales, building up a great customer portfolio.

And now I've been part of the Fullbrook team for four years!

It's hard to believe where all those years have gone, what I still enjoy most is building strong and meaningful relationships with customers, and being part of a great team.

I'm excited to see what the future holds for Fullbrook, and I'm so glad I'm going to be part of it.

Behind the scenes with Frank 🌱

“I thought it would be interesting to give a glimpse of some of the work that goes on behind the scenes.

Part of my role at Fullbrook Nursery is working with our very talented production team to continually add new plants to our offering, while also replacing existing plants with new, improved versions. Here are a couple we’ve added to the range.

Mahonia Nitens ‘Cabaret’
A real head turner. It’s more compact than traditional types, growing to around 1-1.5m, with stunning bunches of orange-red buds that open to yellow. It’s great for late summer and autumn colour, with evergreen foliage and flashes of red on the new growth. It’s also slow growing, so very low maintenance. I think it’s a real winner, and we’ve put it into our 10lt range for spring-summer next season.

Gaura Lindheimeri ‘Flamingo Snow’
One of the few Gauras that impressed me this season. It has a really nice habit producing many breaks with little pruning while keeping a compact shape. It’s a prolific flowerer, from summer into autumn, with elegant butterfly-shaped flowers flushed pink on the outside and in bud. A definite improvement on some of the more traditional varieties. Another one to look out for is Papillon, which shares similar features but is pure white.”

Over to Frank 🍃

“My first experience in horticulture came at the age of 16, when I completed school work experience at Blakedown Nurseries in 1981.

The following year, I agreed to start a three-year apprenticeship. My aim was to work my way through every department so I could understand the whole process, and that has stood me in good stead for the many years in the industry that followed.

After my apprenticeship, I went to Pershore College of Horticulture to complete my NCH in Hardy Nursery Stock.

More than four decades later, horticulture has taken me through numerous businesses, self-employment, running my own company, and around seven years ago, to the Gee family and G-Scapes.

Together with my business partner Jon Mathur, we put forward a proposal for developing the nursery side of the business. That shared vision, alongside Dan and Rob Gee, helped shape what has since grown considerably, and it’s been a privilege to see the company grow, thanks to the amazing team and fantastic people who’ve joined us along the way.”

On Thursday, Frank will be showing us two of the new plants currently being trialled. 🌱

We’re handing over to the Fullbrook Nursery sales team 🌿

For the next four weeks, you’ll be hearing from the people who spend their days talking to customers, working through planting schedules, checking availability, sourcing plants and helping keep projects moving.

There are four of them, and each week we’re putting one in the spotlight.

But this isn’t going to be four weeks of ‘meet the team’. It’s about the customer challenges they help solve, and they experience behind how they solve them.

We’re starting tomorrow with Frank, whose horticultural career began with school work experience in 1981.

More than four decades later, he’s still enjoying horticulture 🌱

Remember we said we were heading to Italy?

Well we're here 🌿

We are spending time with some of our Italian suppliers this week. Walking the nurseries, looking at stock and seeing first hand what's coming through for the months ahead.

Got a specification you haven't sent us yet? There is still time.

A few snapshots from the trip so far 👇

This is what planting ahead looks like. 🌿

Rows and rows of freshly potted plants at Boultons Nursery, part of the growing capability behind Fullbrook Nursery.

While our commercial team works with customers on planting schedules and upcoming projects, our nursery teams are busy growing and preparing stock for what's coming next.

Got projects coming up? The earlier we know what's ahead, the more we can do to help.

Looking for something in particular? We're heading to Italy. 🌿

Next week our MD and Director of Operations will be visiting some of our Italian suppliers, looking at stock and planning ahead for upcoming projects and seasons.

So, while they're there, is there anything you'd like them to look out for?

Perhaps there's a particular variety, specification or size you've been struggling to source. Or you've got a project coming up and want to know what options might be available.

Let us know and we'll add it to the list.

It's all part of making our supplier network work for our customers, not just sourcing when an order lands, but keeping an eye on what's available and what might be needed next.

Drop us a message or speak to the Fullbrook team before they go.
