GPW Architects recently helped a client obtain planning permission for an extension to a characteristic limestone cottage and new annex building in a sensitive conservation area in Lincolnshire.

We achieved this by improving the visual amenity of the street facing elevation by proposing to demolish an existing blockwork garage and replace it with a timber framed annex building set back further from the road to reduce the visual impact on the existing cottage. The design was positively regarded by the local planning authority and conservation officer and we are looking forward to progressing forward with the construction stage in the coming weeks.

Exciting news for Hucknall! ✨

We’re proud to share that GPW Architects have secured planning approval for the transformation of a historic Grade II listed aircraft hangar into a vibrant new indoor padel centre.

Originally built in 1916 as part of Hucknall Aerodrome, the hangars are remarkable for their record breaking timber span roofs, the longest of their kind. They are also rich in history, having witnessed the development of the world’s first vertical take off aircraft.

This characterful structure will be carefully repurposed to accommodate eight padel courts alongside modern facilities, breathing new life into an underused heritage asset while creating a vibrant destination for the local community. It’s a powerful example of how thoughtful design can honour the past while shaping a dynamic future.

Excited to share a few images of our recently completed residential project.

From the first sketch to final finish, this home was designed with natural light and open flow as a priority. The scheme puts emphasis on the interface between the existing building and the new modern interventions through material definition.

Slide through to see:
- A warm, welcoming exterior
- Light filled spaces with framed views
- A kitchen designed for gathering
- interconnected yet defined area

Every space was considered, every detail intentionally resulting in a home that is both practical and personal.

Planning Approved! 🎉

After a long journey, we’re thrilled to share that this beautiful home in the prestigious Park Estate, Nottingham has finally had planning approved — won on appeal! 🙌 The inspector ruled in our favour, overturning all of the original objections.

This planning journey has been one of our most complex to date, carefully balancing input from planning officers, historical consultants, various heritage societies, ecologists, conservation officers… the list goes on.

It’s been a real labour of perseverance, and we couldn’t be happier to see this special project moving forward. Exciting times ahead! 🚀
