MY BIGGEST RESTORATION PROJECT TO DATE!

I knew this one was going to be a big, invasive and messy job but I couldn’t have known it’d escalate into what it become! Some of the rot was apparent and easily visible but a lot of it wasn’t and that’s the nature of restoration work!

What started off as ‘sorting the windows out’ turned into a full strip, rebuild, restore and finish! From removing all the slates, new supporting structure behind them, new insulation, OSB boards, replacing slates, making new trims, new glazing bars, splicing in new mullions and a whole lot more.

I think it was perhaps 10 weeks in total though blistering heatwave to strong winds. You know you’ve been on a job too long when you literally see the seasons change while you’re there.

Learned a lot, worked out a lot of things that I had no choice but work out and done a lot of what I know I’m good at and that’s making things look new again. There’s no rule book or guides when it comes to restoration work, you just have to adapt to whatever you find. Im glad it’s over but I’m also a little sad it’s finished as it’s been a massive pleasure being able to restore this huge frontage of this lovely property.

Still have all the insides to do yet but they can wait a little while, they aren’t holding anything up now.

Products used were:
Primer- Tikkurila Paint ultra primer
Top coat- Tikkurila Paint everal aqua 10
Tape- Q1 Premium Masking Solutions yellow precision
Resin- Repair Care International UK
Putty- Hodgson Sealants
Motivation and graft- Brendan Sheppard-Allen

Thanks to EVERYONE that watched this project, I know a lot of people really followed this one and gave me a lot of kind words when I really needed it.

Peace out✌️

A question as old as time itself, TO TAPE, or not NOT TO TAPE!

I’m a firm believer in taking a little longer to make it a little easier. For jobs like this where you’re likely to be doing 3 coats at least it’s a not brainer.

Not to mention, the lines will be RAZOR sharp and let’s face it, who doesn’t like a sharp line on a window, especially an older one. It just brings it up to a higher standard and looks clean!

Yes it’s a bit slower but taping this whole window took me 7 mins, longer than most people spend trying to get hand pulled lines straight. Either way it’s my method and it works for me. Also, doing all your verticals then your horizontals rather than pane by pane is quicker too, trust me.

Tape used here is precision line tape which won’t be beaten in my opinion. Lasts the duration and removes with ease💪💪💪

Lastly, have to credit for this super nice choppy mix of Olivia deans ‘a couple minutes’.👌

First big external of the year kicked off a little earlier than usual!!!

Client wanted its bi-annual maintenance coat over the whole property. Windows were in really good condition throughout (and that’s down to regular maintenance) so only needed light prep and a recoat. The sun room had some cracks and joins that had opened up on the sills and facias so they were all routered out and got the Repair Care International UK treatment. Made sure to tint the resin to help with the stain opacity. Colour matched it almost perfect to the existing stain so only took 2 coats to blend in and it’ll never open up or split again.

Also as a last little treat I gave the client the offer to change the front door colour. Was originally gloss brown but now it’s colour matched in with the surrounding cladding and it really livens up the front entrance! Not everything has to stay the same, sometimes it’s worth having a little change!!

Amongst brutal wind, beaming sunshine and odd showers I managed to get the whole property done and it will remain protected till 2028 when I do it all over again!
