Another garden trim and tidy for the season ✂️

Is being a gardener just about keeping gardens tidy? Many people underestimate what goes on behind the scenes.

I haven’t touched a tool today, but it’s been non stop since 6.00.

Uploading jobs onto the job management platform for the teams.
Site visits carried out.
Catch up with a team over some client specific jobs for today.
Quotes sent out.
Couple of invoices sorted.
Various emails replied to.
Multiple new enquires dealt with.

Still got some quotes to go out to do and some metalwork to drop off at a fabricators. So looking at a 9+ hr day just here there and everywhere…..after carrying out some van repairs last night after a full day on the tools.

Well, after a week away with this motley crew (and yes with Becky, Poppy and Lily we did take up a whole row on the plane 🙈✈️) it’s back to reality.

The teams have kept on top of jobs whilst we were away which I’m greatly appreciative of 🙏

It’s given a chance to unwind with the family and recharge from the stresses of the daily grind. So I’m now all charged up and ready to go 👊

All our regular end of season customers for hedges, tidy ups and tree work are making usual bookings. With the extreme summer we’ve had and the inevitable wet & windy season around the corner we’ll see what autumn and winter bring.

Loading and loading plant and equipment can be the most precarious part of the job. Here we’re giving Henry his first go on the G23, having correctly strapped and un strapped the machine, successfully offloaded it and got it safely back into the unit 👏

Sudden Branch Drop 🌳

Unfortunately it’s not just us who suffer in the heat, trees do too. Prolonged hot dry spells can weaken cell walls within trees, coupled with the added weight of forming fruit and if we do get any substantial rain the rapid change in internal branch moisture and pressure all add to the likelihood of sudden branch drop in seemingly healthy trees. Our advice:

🌲 Don’t park under large trees in drought conditions
🌲 keep an eye above, look out for branches which may have torn off and be left hanging precariously
🌲 If concerned hire a professional to assess the safety of your trees and provide professional advice for their management

Our teams are always available for urgent works should you have any unfortunate issues with your trees

Productive morning with Henry today. Good to see some interest to learn the ropes.

Importance of LOLER and various other legislation ✅
Pre work checks of kit and for nesting birds ✅
Selecting anchor points and getting ropes into the tree ✅
Methods of accent from thrusts, foot locking, to using foot ascenders ✅
Damaged line aerial rescue ✅
Undamaged line areal rescue ✅
Cambium saver recovery ✅

Finished with sending away with some rope to practice basic knots, looking forward to seeing the progress here 🪢

Out in the big van and trailer today. Being a grounds care operative isn’t just about knowledge of the kit & plants, you need to be able to get waste and equipment from A-B too. Confidence manoeuvring these vans and trailers comes with years of experience, experience we’re always keen to pass on to our newer staff as best we can.

Waste transfer to start the day making sure all our waste is responsibly managed ♻️

Back to college today at Pershore.
Not been here since I did my tree climbing and aerial rescue course some 7-8 years ago.

Was their apprentice sign up day today, brought Henry along who’s starting his horticulture apprenticeship with us.

Was good to meet the course leaders and have a tour of the facilities and garden learning areas.

Looking forward to seeing Henry’s development over the year through a combination of on site and college learning 🌺 🪴 🌻
