A little update on Merlot, our red kite, who has spent much of this summer on a very different kind of journey.

Merlot had been away from Coda for a period of time, but unfortunately she didn’t have the easiest experience away from the familiar surroundings and handlers she knew here.

Around the same time, an ingrowing feather became infected and she needed an operation to remove the affected feather shaft. That meant a long rehabilitation process followed, with plenty of rest, recovery and some very vocal opinions from Merlot along the way - if you’ve heard mysterious squawking in the background of our videos this summer, there’s a good chance it was her.

She’s now at the stage where she can begin rebuilding her confidence with flying again, gradually getting stronger and more comfortable taking to the air and soaring.
The final moment in the video is with SJ, one of the familiar Coda handlers Merlot knows well - and a lovely reminder of just how much trust and familiarity can matter when working with individual birds.

She’s still rebuilding, but seeing Merlot back in the air is a very welcome sight.

We've covered the 'secretly-a-raven-coworker', now it's time for everyone's favourite silent colleague, the barn owl.

Known for soundless flight, exceptional hearing, and a deceptively terrifying shriek, barn owls are incredibly hard workers (as showcased by our superstar Dizzy).
Sharing a lunch room can be a little much though. *cough cough chew your food cough*

Tag your favourite barn owl coworker, or send it to the work group chat and watch people guess who it might be about 👀

Ravens are known for being intelligent, curious and resourceful. And our beloved Loki is no exception 🐦‍⬛

We're honestly not 100% sure where he found some of these items, but it's nice to see his take on interior design.

Which item would you rate the highest?

The doodles are back.
After the response to our first round of badly drawn additions to perfectly good bird photos, we decided the only sensible thing to do was make more.
This time we’ve added everything from binoculars and telephones to questionable weaponry and a surprisingly committed trombone performance.
Working with birds of prey means you get to know their personalities very well, although we cannot confirm that any of these drawings accurately reflect their hobbies.
Which Coda bird got the best makeover this time?

It’s time for our latest Coda Falconry Birds of the Month.

This month’s good bird is Hazel the sparrowhawk, who has been flying beautifully to the glove during training.
And this month’s naughty bird is Loki the raven, who managed to knock over a bucket of water.
Twice.

Every bird at Coda has their own personality, habits and occasional questionable decisions, so this monthly board is our way of celebrating the wins - and documenting the chaos.
Who would you nominate for next month?

A highly scientific social media experiment from Coda Falconry:

Option A: carefully planned, edited bird of prey content.
Option B: Uri, our Steppe Eagle, squawking continuously for 17 seconds.

We have a feeling we already know which one the internet is going to prefer.

Uri is one of the many very individual personalities in the Coda bird team - and sometimes the best behind-the-scenes moments need absolutely no editing at all.

Which content are you choosing: polished educational videos or 17 seconds of Uri yelling?

There are certain sentences you simply don’t expect to become part of your working vocabulary - until you work with birds.
Every member of the Coda Falconry bird team has their own personality, habits and very specific opinions, which means no two days (or conversations) are quite the same.

That individuality is also one of the things guests love about our falconry experience days. You’ll get the chance to meet birds of prey up close, learn about their natural behaviour from our experienced handlers and see some of those personalities for yourself.

Although we cannot guarantee Loki won't try and steal something.
Find out more about our falconry experiences and come meet the characters behind the chaos.

Introducing: Disgruntled Uri 😑

Our beautiful, intelligent, moderately grumpy Steppe Eagle, Uri, showcasing some of the wonderful expressions you can find on our birds at Coda.

What scenario makes you pull this face?

Meet Misty, our great grey owl and the latest member of the Coda Falconry bird team to offer completely serious life advice.

Great grey owls are built for cold climates, with thick, fluffy feathers and one of the largest facial discs of any owl species. That impressive facial disc helps them hear tiny movements beneath deep snow, making them incredible hunters.

Misty, however, has chosen to combine all of this with perfect eye make-up, fearless energy and the occasional beautifully vacant stare.

Her advice is simple: stay soft, listen carefully, be braver than people expect, and never underestimate the power of looking like you know what you’re doing.

You can meet Misty as part of our owl encounter experience at Coda Falconry 🦉

Meet the softer side of a young sparrowhawk.
Hazel, our newest female sparrowhawk, may be a bird of prey, but the little sound she makes at the end of this video is surprisingly musical - almost songbird-like.
Sparrowhawks are small, fast and agile raptors, but like all of the birds at Coda Falconry, Hazel has her own personality, sounds and behaviours as she grows and develops.

🔊 Turn the sound on and listen for her tiny squeak at the end.
