𝗧𝘄𝗼 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗙𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗱 — 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 𝗪𝗮𝘀 𝗛𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗼𝘅...

I recently attended a job where a customer had lost power to two panel heaters and an immersion heater.

After investigating, I found the problem wasn't with any of the appliances.

The neutral connection in the RCD main switch in the meter box had overheated and burnt out, eventually causing the neutral to disconnect completely.

What was interesting was that the customer had experienced intermittent problems for several weeks beforehand.

That can be an important warning sign.

A loose or deteriorating electrical connection can develop high resistance, causing heat to build up. The connection can then deteriorate further until it eventually fails.

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗲:

• Appliances intermittently switching off
• Several items losing power at the same time
• Flickering or unusual electrical behaviour
• Buzzing or crackling
• Burning or overheated plastic smells
• Discolouration or scorching around electrical equipment

An electrical fault doesn't always fail dramatically straight away. Sometimes it gives you weeks of warning.

If your electrics are behaving strangely or a fault keeps coming and going, don't just wait for it to fail completely.

Get it checked before a small problem becomes a serious one.

🚗⚡ THE CHEAPEST EV CHARGER INSTALLATION ISN'T NECESSARILY THE CHEAPEST OPTION

When getting quotes for an EV charger, it's tempting to compare the prices and choose the cheapest one.

But ask yourself:

Are you comparing like for like?

A professional EV charger installation should involve much more than fixing a box to the wall and connecting a cable.

Your electrician should be considering:

✅ The existing electrical installation

✅ The available supply and maximum demand

✅ Dedicated circuit protection

✅ Appropriate RCD protection, including Type A where applicable

✅ PME/TN-C-S fault protection where required

✅ Surge protection requirements

✅ Cable size and voltage drop

✅ Earthing and bonding

✅ Cable routing and mechanical protection

✅ Load management where appropriate

✅ Inspection, testing and certification

The right installation isn't necessarily the one with the lowest price.

It's the one where the design, protection, installation and testing have all been properly considered.

So if you're thinking about getting an EV charger installed, don't just ask:

"How much to install it?"

Ask:

"What's included in the installation?"

That's where the difference between a cheap installation and a properly designed installation can become very important.

🚗⚡ YOUR EV CHARGER NEEDS MORE THAN JUST A BIG CABLE!

When you look at an EV charger on someone's driveway, you see the charger. What you don't see is all the protection behind it. A properly designed installation needs to consider things such as:

🛡️ RCD protection – EV charging equipment requires appropriate additional protection against electric shock. Depending on the charger, this may involve Type A RCD protection together with suitable DC fault detection, or another compliant arrangement.

⚡ PME fault protection – many UK properties have TN-C-S/PME supplies. An electrician needs to determine whether additional protective measures are required to deal with the possibility of a broken PEN conductor.

📈 Surge protection – transient over voltages can damage sensitive electronic equipment, including EV charging equipment. The installation should be assessed for the need for SPD protection.

🔌 Dedicated circuit – an EV charger should be supplied by an appropriately designed circuit with suitable protective devices, rather than simply being treated like another socket.

The charger may be the bit you can see, but the protection is what helps keep the installation safe.

If you're considering EV charging at home, make sure you're getting a properly designed electrical installation, not just a charger bolted to the wall.

THINKING ABOUT INSTALLING AN EV CHARGER?

If you're thinking about getting an electric vehicle, one of the first things you might look at is which charger you'd like installed.

But there's something more important to consider first...

Can your existing electrical installation safely accommodate it?

An EV charger can place a significant load on your electrical installation for several hours at a time, so there are several things an electrician needs to assess before installation.

🔌 Is the existing supply suitable?

⚡ Can the consumer unit accommodate the additional circuit?

🛡️ What type of RCD protection is required?

🏠 Is the installation on a PME/TN-C-S supply, and does the charger require additional PME fault protection?

📈 Is surge protection required?

🔋 Will load management be appropriate to prevent excessive demand on the property?

And that's before we've even considered the cable route and where the charger will actually be positioned.

Choosing the charger is only part of the job.

The important thing is making sure the complete installation is designed and installed correctly.

If you're considering an EV charger, speak to your electrician before buying the charger.

It's much easier to design the installation around your requirements than discover afterwards that something needs changing.

⚡ A loose connection can be a serious fire risk ⚡

During a recent Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR), I picked up a high-resistance reading on a socket circuit.

Further investigation found the cause — a loose connection behind a socket supplying a microwave oven.

It might sound like a small fault, but loose electrical connections can become dangerous. A poor connection can create increased resistance, heat and arcing, particularly when the circuit is supplying a high-load appliance such as a microwave. Over time, this heat can damage the socket, wiring and surrounding materials, potentially creating a serious fire hazard.

This is exactly why regular inspection and testing of electrical installations is so important.

A circuit can appear to be working perfectly — the sockets still work, the appliances still switch on — but that doesn't necessarily mean the installation is safe.

An EICR involves testing and inspecting the installation to identify defects and deterioration that may not be obvious during normal use.

🔌 If you haven't had your electrical installation inspected for some time, don't wait for a fault to show itself.

Finding a problem before it becomes an emergency could prevent damage, disruption or potentially a fire.

⚡ Can a power surge damage your electrical equipment?

🔥 Could your fuse board help prevent electrical fires?

Electrical fires can sometimes start because of tiny electrical arcs caused by damaged cables, loose connections or worn accessories.

These faults may not draw enough current to trip a standard circuit breaker, but they can generate enough heat to become a fire risk.

That's where an AFDD (Arc Fault Detection Device) comes in.

An AFDD continuously monitors the electrical supply and can detect dangerous arcing faults before they develop into something more serious.

It provides another layer of protection alongside the RCBOs in a modern consumer unit.

Although AFDDs aren't required in every home, they are increasingly recommended for certain properties and can offer valuable additional protection for your family and your home.

Electrical safety has come a long way over the years, and modern consumer units are designed with far more protection than older fuse boards.

⚡ What is an RCBO... and why does it matter?

Most homeowners have never heard of an RCBO, but it's one of the best safety features found in modern consumer units.

An RCBO (Residual Current Breaker with Overcurrent Protection) combines two important jobs into one device:

✅ Protects against electric shock if electricity leaks to earth.
✅ Protects your wiring against overloads and short circuits.

Another big advantage is that each circuit has its own protection. So if one circuit develops a fault, only that circuit trips rather than half the house losing power.

Older fuse boards often rely on shared protection, meaning a single fault can affect several circuits.

Modern consumer units are typically fitted with RCBOs on every circuit, providing improved safety, greater convenience and easier fault finding.
