01 | Wargrave

The beginning of a significant transformation.

A look back at the early stages of our Wargrave project, where demolition of the existing property marked the first steps towards the construction of a bespoke contemporary family home.

Designed as a series of interconnected pavilion-style forms, the new dwelling takes a considered approach to contemporary residential architecture, with particular attention to its proportions, material palette and relationship with the surrounding landscape.

These photographs document the initial demolition and site clearance works, marking the transition from the design and technical stages into construction.

Wargrave remains one of our most significant residential projects to date, and one we’re particularly proud to be involved in.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing more of the construction journey, from the foundations and structural framework through to the development of the building itself.

01 | Wallace Avenue

One of our more ambitious early projects, and one that remains particularly memorable for Atelier T&B.

Working with an existing Art Deco apartment building in Worthing, we were appointed to explore the addition of a contemporary rooftop storey, creating additional residential accommodation while respecting the character and architectural identity of the original building.

Our approach was to introduce a carefully considered contemporary addition, drawing on the symmetry, proportions and rhythm of the existing façade, while allowing the new architecture to have its own identity.

The proposal was always going to present planning challenges, particularly in relation to the additional height. Despite taking the scheme through a full planning application and subsequent appeal, we were ultimately unable to secure consent.

Not every ambitious proposal makes it through the planning process, but that doesn’t make the work any less valuable.

As one of the earlier projects undertaken by the practice, it was a fantastic opportunity to work with such a distinctive building, explore its potential and take the design as far as we could.

A project we’re still incredibly proud to have been involved in, and one we’ve enjoyed bringing to life through these updated architectural visuals.

01 | Shermanbury

Revisiting an earlier design iteration for a substantial residential extension and remodelling project in Shermanbury, West Sussex, with updated architectural visualisations reflecting our current presentation style.

The proposal explored a comprehensive transformation of the existing property, introducing a substantial rear extension alongside a carefully considered reconfiguration of the internal accommodation.

Central to the design was the creation of more generous, light-filled living spaces, improving the relationship between the house and garden while retaining the character of the original building.

Planning permission was successfully secured, with the design subsequently refined through the planning process and a further approval granted under Section 73.

These visualisations capture an earlier stage of the architectural development, illustrating the original design approach before the scheme evolved into its approved form.

Following planning approval, our involvement continued through the detailed technical design, with the project now progressing through construction.

01 | Gomshall

Revisiting an earlier series of architectural visualisations for the ongoing development of four detached homes in Gomshall, working alongside Runnymede Homes.

We’ve recently refreshed these initial illustrations to reflect our current visual presentation style, bringing greater depth, atmosphere and detail to the traditional Arts and Crafts-inspired architecture.

Originally produced during the early design stages, these images were intended to communicate the architectural character of the proposed homes rather than accurately represent their positioning within the site. As the scheme has evolved, we’re now exploring a more detailed series of site-specific visualisations to better reflect the development in its current form.

Since these early proposals, the project has progressed considerably through detailed technical design, with construction now underway and groundworks progressing on site.

Reimagining a Scandinavian Home

A comprehensive transformation of a 1980s Scandinavian-style home, carefully reimagined to create a contemporary family residence within its established countryside setting.

The project began with an ambitious brief to substantially extend and remodel the existing property, reconsidering both its architectural character and the way the internal spaces functioned.

The proposal involved demolishing the existing garage to accommodate a substantial two-storey extension, alongside a complete reconfiguration of the original accommodation.

Central to the design was a new entrance arrangement, providing the opportunity to reorganise the ground floor and establish a more considered relationship between the kitchen, living spaces and surrounding gardens.

At first-floor level, the extension introduced a new principal bedroom suite, complete with a walk-in wardrobe and ensuite bathroom. A full-height glazed link connected the new accommodation to the original house, creating a distinct architectural feature while bringing natural light into the heart of the design.

Externally, the proposal reinterpreted the character of the original building through a restrained palette of brickwork, render, timber detailing and expansive glazing. The challenge was to integrate a substantial new addition while ensuring the completed composition remained balanced and coherent.

One of our earliest commissions following the establishment of Atelier T&B in 2021, this project progressed from initial concept through successful planning approval and detailed technical design, including coordination with structural engineers and other consultants, in accordance with the RIBA Plan of Work through to Stage 4.

Although the wider proposals were ultimately not constructed, it remains a project we are particularly proud to have been entrusted with.

A slightly more personal update from Atelier T&B.

We’ve been a little quieter on here recently, although certainly not behind the scenes.

September was a particularly special month for us, as we got married.

Since then, it has been a busy period for the practice, with existing projects progressing through planning, technical design and construction, alongside a number of exciting new projects beginning to take shape.

We’ve got plenty to share and will be returning to our usual project updates over the coming weeks.

01 | Henfield

Planning approved for a carefully considered home transformation in Henfield.

Approved in December 2024, this project focused on reworking an existing home to create a more practical, generous and connected family living arrangement.

The brief included a new open-plan kitchen, living and dining area with a stronger relationship to the garden, alongside a large master suite with ensuite and dressing area. Improvements to the existing roof also allowed a previous garage conversion to become a much more usable bedroom space.

Internally, the proposals improved circulation and room layouts throughout the home, while retaining a separate drawing room to the front of the property.

The application faced strong neighbour opposition, including concerns around light, amenity and the scale of the proposal. Through careful design, supporting information and clear planning arguments, the scheme was approved without the need to alter the design.

A good example of how a well-considered extension can unlock the potential of an existing home, while still respecting its setting.

01 | Tender package

A closer look at a tender package currently being developed for a replacement dwelling in rural West Sussex.

At this stage, the drawings are intended to provide enough information for the project to be priced, coordinated and reviewed before the next stage of detailed design.

The package includes general arrangement plans, elevations, sections, early build-ups and an accompanying schedule of materials, setting out the developing approach to layout, construction and specification.

For this project, we have prepared two routes for consideration, a traditional construction option and a timber frame option. Once the preferred route has been agreed, the Building Regulations and construction issue package will be developed in further detail.
