This uni project started my career, and yes I’ll always harp on about it 🤷♀️
Norma was my Grandma, a wonderful woman, strong, talented at drama, and was the sunshine in every room. Her humour made me experience my first ugly belly laughs, I can still feel the warmth of her hugs, and unfortunately we lost her to Alzheimer’s in the midst of this project.
I wanted to use visuals to immerse what that nostalgic feeling felt like as she looked through the photo albums family had brought her, desperate to bring back any flake of recognition in her eyes, any warmth of memory for the full life she had lived.
I poured my heart and soul into this video, a 2.5D parallax containing over 150 cut out images (before AI made cutting out digitally so easy) and then applying my own soundscape of the sounds I imagined would accompany them.
This same video was shown at my end of year show and I was scouted by a Motion Designer working at a production company who hired me as an intern immediately, not for the technical skills as I know there’s many imperfections here - but for the storytelling, the immersion, and the core human spirit of design.
An internship turned into several years freelance, to landing a job as Steven Bartlett’s Video Editor and Graphic Designer for the Diary of a CEO podcast, and for me now leading my own creative team and having just passed a course in Creative Direction.
In a world of AI, please remember the stories that make us human, the beauty is in the imperfection.
You never know where a project may lead.
