Front of House Transformation ✨

Whilst planting design and garden health are at the heart of what we do, sometimes a driveway clean can make just as much of an impact on a property's first impression.

This driveway had gradually become discoloured with built-up dirt and moss. A thorough clean has restored its appearance and instantly brightened the whole front of the property.

Stepping into something new next Saturday at the Holistic Fair with Something Positive Solutions

Sycamore Gardening has always been about confidence, calm, and connection and this time I’m pushing myself a little further by bringing a small selection of handmade nature‑inspired items to sell.

It’s a bit outside my comfort zone, but that’s what community events are for: trying new things, showing up, and sharing what we love.

There’ll also be chance to talk with me about the work I do from planting design and garden health diagnostics to the wellbeing‑focused approach that sits behind it. I’m always happy to chat about how I’m tying my background in mental health and confidence‑building into my gardening work, and how those ideas are shaping the services I offer.

Looking forward to being part of a day that brings people together in such a positive way.

Feeling grateful for the brilliant local organisations that make Hartlepool such a supportive place to work. After the response to my last community post, I wanted to highlight a few more groups and businesses I’ve had the pleasure of working alongside recently!

Everest Large Breed Grooming - Just celebrated their 1st birthday with a cracking new salon refurb for all the lovely doggies to continue looking their best Barry loves it here!

Dutch Garden Centre Hartlepool Limited - I get all my plants both personally and professionally from these guys and they are so friendly and helpful and have the greatest array of stock that is constantly refreshed!

Fork & Fairway - Huge array of savoury and sweet items and a great meal prep selection to stop you having to think about what is for tea!

Lesley's Beauty & Aesthetics - A wide range of services available from injections to lashes and removals ran by the friendliest owner!

Voices Of Hartlepool - Doing great work in the community within Hartlepool, I've been working closely with them on the Eco club kids community garden but their work includes helping those affected by the cost of living crisis and they are truly inspiring people!

A quiet morning in the community garden today, the Eco Club kids may not have been here, but I still popped in to help out. I made sure the space was not only tidy but, more importantly, safe for when they’re back. Ivy cleared from the walkways, stinging nettles pulled from the borders, and those thorny brambles finally gone before a full sweep and tidy!

The work Voices Of Hartlepool and Thrive Teesside do is genuinely brilliant. Giving children a safe, creative space to explore nature and get hands‑on with gardening feels more important than ever in a technological age. It’s exactly why I love volunteering here, and I’m really grateful to be asked back to support the Eco Club sessions.

I’ve got some great ideas lined up for the next few activities, and I’m excited to see the kids back in the garden soon.

I know the charities are always looking for donations for the garden too so anything is always appreciated no matter how small!

A little autumn refresh at my own front door today.

We’ve just planted yellow and violet violas alongside some absolutely stunning celosia in the barrels outside the house, a quick, easy autumn colour win that brightens the entrance.

The summer annuals have done brilliantly this year, lasting well into October, so the marigolds, salvias, and ageratum have now been lifted to make way for the new display. Hidden underneath are neat rows of daffodil bulbs ready to pop up in spring, which means these barrels stay full and interesting right through the seasons.

It’s a great technique if you’re short on space, small yards, balconies, or tight front‑of‑house areas can still have year‑round interest with a bit of thoughtful layering.

Plant Highlight: Eryngium (Sea Holly) 🌊

Perfect for Hartlepool’s coastal conditions, Eryngium thrives in salt‑laden winds, poor sandy soil, and full sun, exactly the kind of tough, exposed spots our coastline creates. Its metallic blue cones and spiny bracts bring a sharp, architectural edge that stands out against silvers, grasses and the soft movement of seaside planting.

Why I use it here: it’s resilient, sculptural, and naturally suited to coastal gardens. Sea Holly gives that cool, maritime blue that anchors a border and ties the planting back to the Hartlepool shoreline.

A lovely brief from this customer: give the shop front something that truly draws the eye. So that’s exactly what we’ve gone for with these two stunning 18" winter hanging baskets.

The coco liner adds an aesthetic, natural finish while holding just enough moisture for healthy root growth, without the waterlogging that leads to root rot. The steel basket brings subtle twists for added charm, and the powder‑coated finish means durability right through the seasons.

Now for the planting itself:

🍂 Skimmia japonica ‘Rubella’ anchors each basket with its iconic red winter buds and deep green foliage. These stay bold all winter and open into white flowers come spring.

🌸 A pink cyclamen sits proudly at the front, matching the shop’s accents perfectly.

🌷 Blue and white winter violas are side‑planted for pops of colour that brighten even the coldest days.

🍃 And finally, trailing ivy. Originally we planned to let it cascade naturally, but with a busy footpath and a strong wind corridor, both myself and the customer agreed that nobody wants to be greeted by a face‑full of floating ivy! So we’ve pinned it up for now it’ll still grow beautifully, wrapping around the chains and softening the basket over time.

A thoughtful pair of baskets for a great local shop Bubblicious Emporium, designed to bring colour, structure and a welcoming feel right through winter.

A day and a half of focused maintenance has brought this stunning garden right back to a manageable baseline. Heavy de‑weeding, removing ivy from the house, redefining the borders, and tackling both geranium and bindweed pockets have made a huge difference. Finished off with a full clean‑up and grass cut, it’s now ready to thrive on one of our monthly maintenance plans. A big job, but incredibly rewarding.

Had a great time teaching the Eco Club kids about conkers last week with all the ones me and Barry the Beagle collected from our garden! And also helping keep ontop of the garden jobs and getting roped into the insanely difficult conker treasure hunt 🤣
