This month, we made the decision to change our planned Toolbox Talk following the tragic loss of a young construction worker a construction site. Bringing our team together to revisit Site Safety gave us time to reflect and consider our practices.
The incident occurred on a construction site in the north of England during the ground works phase. Early investigation findings suggest a large pipe became unstable fatally wounding a 17year subcontractor working in the vicinity. Investigations are ongoing;
However, our thoughts are with everyone affected by this devastating incident.
Site Safety rules such as designated walkways, vehicle crossing points, wearing high-visibility clothing, avoiding mobile phones and headphones, or waiting for acknowledgement from plant operators are often considered another box to tick.
But incidents like this remind us why those rules exist.
Construction remains one of the highest-risk industries in the UK. Every year, workers lose their lives through incidents involving falls from height, moving vehicles, moving materials, falling objects and other site hazards.
It can be easy to see site rules, risk assessments, safe systems of work, PPE requirements and Toolbox Talks as just another part of the job.
But these measures exist for a reason.
One of the key lessons we can all take away is that safety is rarely about one big decision. It is often the result of many small decisions made throughout the day:
🦺 Wearing the correct PPE
🚶 Using designated pedestrian routes
đź‘€ Staying alert around moving vehicles and plant
📵 Avoiding distractions such as mobile phones and headphones
👍 Making eye contact and receiving acknowledgement before crossing vehicle routes
🤝 Looking out for colleagues and challenging unsafe behaviours
This is exactly why we hold Toolbox Talks.
Every reminder, every conversation and every lesson learned has the potential to prevent an accident and ensure that everyone goes home safely to their family at the end of the day.
Safety is not just a policy. It is a responsibility we all share.
