𪰠Has the heatwave brought flies into your home?
We are receiving numerous calls about fly infestations, particularly bluebottles. In one clientâs home, the kitchen appeared to fill with them within minutes of the dog being fed.
The dog food had not caused an infestation in minutes. More likely, its smell attracted flies that were already inside or nearby. A sudden appearance of numerous bluebottles can indicate an existing breeding source.
To reduce the risk during a heatwave:
⢠Remove unfinished pet food promptly
⢠Wash bowls and clean the surrounding floor
⢠Keep human food covered
⢠Empty and clean kitchen bins frequently
⢠Securely wrap food waste
⢠Keep outdoor bins closed and shaded
⢠Fit fly screens to frequently opened windows
If large numbers suddenly appear, remove exposed food, contain the flies in one room and clean food-preparation surfaces. Check bins, food waste, pet-feeding areas and concealed spillages.
Persistent bluebottles can sometimes come from a dead bird or rodent in a loft, chimney or wall void. If flies return each day, or you cannot safely reach the suspected source, professional investigation is advisable.
