Two reasons. First, shop-bought bait contains first-generation rodenticides - significantly less potent than the second-generation anticoagulants (SGARs) that BPCA-accredited professionals are licensed to use.

Five signs you have rats - and what each one tells you.

1. Dark pellet-shaped droppings, roughly the size of an olive. The most reliable sign. Found along skirting boards, behind appliances, in loft insulation, or near outdoor bins.
2. Scratching or scurrying sounds in walls, ceilings, or under floors at night. Rats are nocturnal - this is when they are most active.
3. Gnaw marks on cables, skirting boards, or food packaging. Rat incisor teeth grow continuously and must be filed by constant gnawing. Electrical cables are a common and serious target.
4. Greasy smear marks along walls at low level, left by rat fur on repeated runs through the same routes.
5. A distinctive ammonia-like smell in enclosed spaces such as loft voids, garages, or under-sink cupboards.
