That layer could be holding your lawn back. 👇

A little thatch is normal. But when it builds up, it can make it harder for water and nutrients to reach the soil, encourage shallow rooting and leave your grass more vulnerable to drought.

Your lawn might look green for a while then struggle when conditions get tough.

It can also make overseeding less effective, with seed sitting in the thatch instead of making contact with the soil.

That’s why I check what’s happening underneath before recommending work. If excessive thatch is part of the problem, feeding and adding more seed won’t remove it.

Seeing daddy long legs everywhere? This is why I’m talking to customers about leatherjackets.

Their larvae feed beneath the lawn, damaging grass roots. By the time you notice the bare patches, damage may already be underway.

I’m taking bookings for October leatherjacket treatments across my local service area. This is the prime window to treat them effectively.

This is my face during a BUSY renovation season... you'll generally find me covered in or dust. The ground is still bone dry so it's making renovations very dusty this season.

Please rain soon. Once all my renovations are done though. Or just at night. Is there a rain dance for that?

Is putting the seed down the final step in a renovation?

Nope. There's a few more steps I take before I can say the job is done.

After seed comes soil.
After soil comes the drag mat.
After the drag mat comes the fertiliser.
And after that, the most important job; leaving the job tidy.

This is everything removed from a relatively small front lawn, after just the first pass.

But here’s the important bit: I don’t decide how many passes a lawn needs before I start.

I scarify, collect the waste and reassess.

Some lawns might need relatively little intervention. Others need several passes, often working in different directions, before I’m happy with what’s been removed.

So, why does it matter?

Scarification doesn’t just pull out moss, thatch and dead material. It also stands up long, lateral growth that has been lying flat across the surface of the lawn.

If I simply scarified repeatedly without cutting between passes, a lot of that newly lifted growth would remain behind.

And we don’t necessarily want it there.

Excessive lateral growth can create a dense, tangled layer within the sward, reducing light and airflow around the base of the grass and competing with the finer, more upright growth I’m trying to encourage.

During a renovation, there’s another really important reason to remove it: seed-to-soil contact.

When I overseed, I want as little as possible sitting between that seed and the soil. The cleaner and more open I can make the surface, the better opportunity the new seed has to establish.

So after scarification has stood that lateral growth up, I mow again to remove it, then go back in with the scarifier for the next pass.

It’s an extra step, but it leaves me with a cleaner, more open surface ready for the next stages of the renovation.

Scarify. Cut. Scarify again. Cut again.

And why ? Because my dad brought me up right.
