Auchingramont Court, Hamilton | Case Study

A project that really shows the skill and patience involved in stonemasonry.

Auchingramont Church in Hamilton was built in 1860, making this historic building around 166 years old today. Designed by James Salmon in the Decorated Gothic style, its tall stone spire remains one of its most distinctive features.

We were called to Auchingramont Court after an issue with the steeple. A section of stone had fallen from the spire during a storm a couple of years ago.

Our team was tasked with making the structure safe and carefully restoring the damaged areas while remaining sympathetic to the original building.

The works involved stone replacement, traditional lime pointing and detailed hand carving, with new stone worked to replicate and match the historic details of the original steeple.

Huge credit to our team on this one.

Working at this height, on a narrow stone spire and exposed to the elements, is challenging enough before you consider the level work that is required thereafter.

Projects like this are exactly why the skills of traditional stonemasonry remain so important.

Pointing and Harling - What's the difference?

Lime pointing is what you find between each section of stonework on a traditional building

It helps protect the masonry, manage moisture and maintain the traditional character of the building.

Lime harling works differently.

Lime harling essentially provides a jacket to the historic stonework, offering protection to the masonry.

A breathable lime render is applied across the facade, covering the stone beneath and providing an additional layer of protection from the elements.

This is done in multiple coats, with each coat serving an important purpose.

Both are traditional methods designed to allow older buildings to breathe and manage moisture naturally.

Once harling is complete, typically a lime wash is applied in numerous coats to complete the harling process.

A lot of traditional buildings have been harled historically and there is usually evidence found on the historic sandstone I the form of traces of lime harl or lime wash.

Getting the specification correct is essential on lime pointing and harling.

Meet our new yard manager, Ryan

Ryan joined us recently as our Yard Manager and has already made a huge difference behind the scenes.

Ryan keeps the yard organised, coordinates materials and equipment, manages deliveries across our sites, making sure our teams have what they need each day.

He plays a huge part in keeping the whole operation running smoothly.

The scaffold is finally down in Callander.

Until now, all we’ve really been able to show of this project is a fully scaffolded gable end.

With scaffolding now dismantled, we can finally reveal the work that has gone on for many months.

The original gable collapsed in the middle of the night, leaving a significant rebuilding project ahead.

Our team carefully rebuilt the entire gable, reusing as much of the original stone from the collapse as possible.

We introduced new rubble stonework where required. This included a newly formed chimney stack, which sadly didn’t survive the collapse.

Once the gable was reconstructed, the new stonework was then finished with traditional lime pointing, allowing the building to breathe and giving the finish appropriate to the original property.

A project like this takes a huge amount of work, from sorting and selecting the fallen stone to rebuilding an entire three-storey gable safely and correctly.

Seeing the scaffold come down and the house put back together is what it’s all about.

Fantastic work from everyone involved, a fantastic project and a result the team can be proud of.

I’m absolutely overwhelmed to say that on Thursday night, Stratum Masonry won the Inspiring Future Talent Award at the Glasgow Business Awards 2026.

This one means a lot.

When I started Stratum, one of the biggest reasons behind it was to create opportunities for the next generation and help protect the future of our trade.

I wanted to build a company where young people could come in, learn properly, work alongside experienced stonemasons and ultimately build a career they could be proud of.

Seven years later, to be recognised for exactly that is incredibly special.

We’ve watched apprentices come through the business and become qualified stonemasons, we’ve visited schools to speak about careers in the trade, delivered talks and CPDs, and continued to push for more opportunities for young people to learn traditional skills.

There is still so much more we want to do, but receiving an award like this reminds us why we started.

A massive thank you to the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce for putting on such a brilliant evening and for recognising the importance of investing in future talent.

And, most importantly, thank you to our team. The experienced tradesmen who take the time to teach and pass on their knowledge are every bit as important as the young people willing to learn.

This is exactly what Stratum was created for.
