Months of work finally revealed

And what a building to reveal.

After months of work, we finally got our first look at this beautiful former church in Hamilton.

There is always something special about the moment the scaffold comes down on a restoration project.

For many weeks, the team sees the building one section at a time from behind scaffold lifts.

Then suddenly, you get to stand back and see the result as a whole.

We’ll be getting the drone up next for a closer look at the completed stonework, with plenty of detailed photos to follow.

A huge well done to all our team who worked on this project and our client for getting us involved..

Winning a project is one thing.

Building enough trust that a client continues to bring you back is something we value even more.

We’ve developed a strong working relationship with our commercial clients, supporting them with the maintenance and repair of their sandstone buildings in Central Scotland.

When stonework requires attention, our team can assess the issue, recommend the appropriate solution and carry out the work with an understanding of both the building and the standards expected by the client.

For us, commercial work has never been about completing one project and moving on.

It is about building long term relationships and becoming the specialist contractor our clients know they can rely on when their buildings need us.

That continued trust means a great deal to our team and something we never take for granted.

Why doesn’t new sandstone always match?

Because choosing replacement stone involves far more than simply matching a colour.

This new sandstone mullion was recently installed by our team after carefully selecting a stone that would sit as naturally as possible alongside the existing fabric.

Before replacement stone is ordered, samples of the original stone can be sent for laboratory analysis to help us better understand its composition and characteristics.

We then work with quarries and specialist stone suppliers to identify the closest compatible sandstone currently available.

Samples are compared against the existing building before the final stone is selected, cut and worked to the required dimensions.

But sandstone is a natural material.

Even stone from the same quarry can vary in colour, grain and mineral content.

Add decades of Scottish weathering to the existing stonework and achieving an identical visual match on day one is rarely possible.

That is why good stone matching is about more than colour.

It is about selecting a compatible stone that performs correctly and will weather naturally alongside the historic fabric for decades to come.

Not every stone replacement is straightforward.

This recent replacement is a great example of where our team had to think practically to find the right solution.

The existing window bars were contributing to deterioration of the historic fabric and had caused the sandstone cill to fracture in several areas.

To prevent the same issue affecting the new replacement, we carefully cut and removed the lower section of the bars before installing the new sandstone cill.

Long term, we would recommend that the existing window bars are reviewed and an alternative solution considered. If left as they are, they have the potential to cause further damage to the surrounding historic fabric.

It is often these smaller details that require the most thought on site.

Every historic building presents its own challenges. The solution is not always obvious from the outset and sometimes it takes experience, patience and practical problem solving to get it right.

This formed part of a much larger restoration project and was just one of the many challenges our team successfully worked through.

Another landmark restoration completed in the heart of Glasgow.

Stratum Masonry delivered stonework restoration to key areas of this impressive building on St Vincent Street, one of the city centre’s most prominent locations.

Our team carried out extensive sandstone replacement and lime pointing works across the façade, carefully restoring deteriorated areas while retaining as much of the original fabric as possible.

Shoutout to all the team who have been involved in this project which was far from straight forward due to it’s city centre location.

Over the next few years, Stratum Masonry will be helping to care for and maintain Linstone’s traditional building stock, ensuring their properties receive the specialist attention they need for the years ahead.
