Now the heating is going back on properly, have a quick feel of your radiators.

👉 Hot at the top but cold at the bottom?
👉 Cold at the top?
👉 One side warm and the other doing absolutely nothing?
👉 One radiator refusing to join in altogether?

Where the radiator is cold can give clues about what might be going on with your heating system.

🔧 You’ve probably seen one of these… but what does it actually do?

This red unit is a circulation pump — and it has a pretty important job.

Its job is to keep the hot water moving around your heating system and through your radiators.

So when it isn’t working properly, you might start noticing things such as radiators taking longer to heat up, parts of the system staying cold or unusual noises coming from the heating system.

It’s one of those bits of kit most people never think about… until something stops working 😄

💨 WHO F@RTED? … It might actually be the boiler 😂

If you’ve turned the heating back on and noticed an odd smell, you’re not imagining it.

Sometimes boilers can produce unusual smells after a period of not being used properly over the summer.

It could be something simple, but strange smells around a boiler shouldn’t just be ignored.

If you ever smell gas, or something just doesn’t seem right, get it checked properly.

So be honest…

👀 **THE ANSWER…**

Wednesday’s mystery dial is your **heating system pressure gauge**.

On many sealed systems, when the heating is cold, you’d normally expect the pressure to be somewhere around **1–1.5 bar** — although the correct range can vary depending on the boiler and system. For this Worcester, it does need adjusting before turning on the heating.

It’s worth keeping an eye on because if the pressure keeps dropping, rises too high or you’re repeatedly having to top it up, something may need checking.

So… did you know what it was? 😄

And more importantly — **when did you last look at yours?** drop your make and model and pressure bar rating in the comments and we can tell you if you need to adjust it.

🔥 This is what came out of a heat exchanger during a recent job.

It’s a good reminder that some boiler problems aren’t obvious from the outside.

Build-up and debris inside the system can affect how efficiently everything is working, and it’s one of the reasons regular servicing and maintenance are so important.

You don’t need to know what’s going on inside your boiler — that’s Dom’s job.
