My advice after heatwaves, drought, and sun damaged grass:

Why Grass Turns Brown in the Heat
- Dormancy: Grass shuts its leaves down during extreme heat and drought to save energy and protect its core growing points (crowns).
- Survival: The roots stay alive underground even when the top layer looks crispy and dead.

Recovery After Rain
- Timeline: Expect new green shoots to appear in 2 weeks, with full recovery taking up to 4 weeks.
- Check the Soil: Heavy clay soil absorbs water slowly, so deep or prolonged rain is needed to fully reach the roots.
- Bare Patches: If certain spots do not green up, the grass in those areas may have actually died and will need reseeding.

How to Help Your Lawn Recover
- Stay Off the Grass: Limit walking on the stressed lawn to avoid damaging fragile recovering shoots.
- Raise Mower Blades: Cut the grass higher than usual to shade the soil and retain moisture.
- Hold Off on Fertilizer: Avoid feeding dry or stressed grass until it is actively growing again.

Grass is tough, but don't over-mow or cut too short when it is recovering.
