It’s been really busy for us recently, which we’re incredibly grateful for, but it’s also made us realise there are areas of the business we need to tighten up.

We’re working on getting quotations back to people quicker, improving our communication and making sure the whole process is as smooth as possible from the first enquiry onwards.

We’re human, and we’re never going to get everything perfect every single time.

But if we notice something that could be better, we want to do something about it.

Our promise has always been to make having work done on your home easier, and as the business grows, we need to keep improving how we deliver on that.

How much does a new boiler actually cost?

It’s one of those questions where the answer is simply: it depends.

A straightforward boiler replacement could be very different in price to one that involves moving the boiler, changing pipework or upgrading other parts of the heating system.

As a rough guide, a new gas boiler replacement is often around £3,500, but there’s no one price that fits every home.

When comparing quotes, make sure you’re looking at what’s actually included, not just the final figure.

The cheapest quote isn’t always the cheapest job.

Another bathroom pending…

This one is a good example of why bathroom planning is about more than just choosing tiles and fittings.

When you’re working with a sloping or awkward ceiling, you have to think carefully about how the space is going to be used.

Where should the shower go?

Where will the screen sit?

How much usable head height do you actually have?

Where can the pipework go?

And how do you make sure the finished space still feels open and practical?

These are all things that are much easier to work out before the first tile goes on the wall.

Awkward spaces can actually make some of the most interesting bathrooms, but they do need a bit more thought and planning.

We’ll share the finished bathroom once this one is transformed.

Has anyone actually turned the heating on yet?

Personally, I’m seeing how long I can go without putting ours on 😂

But now we’re getting into that time of year, it’s worth giving your heating system a quick check before you actually need it.

A few simple things you can check yourself:

Check your radiators

If the top of a radiator is cold while the bottom is warm, it may need bleeding.

If the bottom is cold but the top is warm, that can be a sign of sludge or a circulation issue.

Check your boiler pressure

Have a look at the pressure gauge when the heating is cold. Most systems will sit somewhere around 1 to 1.5 bar, but check your boiler instructions as this can vary.

If you’re constantly having to top the pressure back up, there may be an underlying issue that needs looking at.

Check your radiator valves

If your heating has been off for months, thermostatic radiator valves can sometimes become stuck. It’s worth checking that they’re actually moving.

Listen for anything unusual

Banging, kettling, gurgling or whistling from your boiler or radiators can all be signs that something isn’t quite right.

And if you’ve got radiators that aren’t heating properly, rooms that stay cold or a boiler that keeps losing pressure, it’s better to sort it before you’re relying on the heating every day.

Hopefully we can all get a few more weeks out of the summer before we have to admit it’s officially heating season.

Why you shouldn’t choose your renovation quote on price alone

When you’re getting quotes for a renovation, it’s very tempting to go straight for the cheapest one.

But before you make that decision, it’s worth looking at what’s actually included.

A few things to check:

• Is all the preparation work included?

• Are materials clearly specified?

• Does the quote cover all the different trades involved?

• What happens if something unexpected is found once work starts?

• Is waste removal included?

• Are there any areas that have been left as provisional costs?

• Who is actually managing the project and coordinating everyone?

Two quotes can look very different on paper, but there can be a reason for that.

A cheaper quote isn’t necessarily a bad quote, and a more expensive quote isn’t necessarily a better one. The important thing is understanding exactly what you’re paying for.

The cheapest quote can sometimes become the most expensive project if important parts of the work weren’t included from the beginning.

It’s always worth asking questions before you agree to anything.

Budget bathroom renovation… is it possible?

A full bathroom renovation can easily cost £5,000–£10,000+ depending on the size, specification and how much needs changing.

But you don’t always need to spend that to get a bathroom that looks and feels completely different.

If the existing toilet, basin or bath are still in good condition, reuse them. There’s no point replacing perfectly good sanitaryware just for the sake of it.

Keeping the existing layout is another big one. Moving plumbing around can add a lot to the cost, so if we can work with what’s already there, we can save money.

Then it’s about being sensible with tiles, taps, furniture and finishes.

A budget renovation doesn’t have to look cheap. It’s about spending money in the right places and not wasting it where you don’t need to.

If you’re thinking about renovating your bathroom but have a budget to stick to, give us a message. There’s usually more we can do than you might think.

For those who haven’t come across us before, hello 😬

I’m Isaac and I run McDonald Trade Network with my wife, Summer.

We’re a local home renovation and Design & Build company, set up to give homeowners one point of contact for any project they have.

I’ve spent years working with and building relationships with good, reliable tradespeople, and over time we’ve built a network covering every trade you could need for a home project.

Summer comes from a customer service background, so between the two of us, we felt we could offer service you might not normally get dealing with trades.

Our main focus is renovations and Design & Build projects, from kitchens and bathrooms through to extensions and loft conversions. We do also still help with repairs and maintenance when needed.

We only work with tradespeople we trust, and we are so confident in our work that we back all of it with a 12 month guarantee, so our clients have that extra peace of mind too.

We’re still growing and getting our name out there locally, but our aim is to be the people you can trust to get the job done properly, without the usual headache of organising it all yourself.

So if you see McDonald Trade Network popping up in the local groups, now you know who’s behind it!

Back to school? Is your home ready for the daily chaos? 😂

One thing that can make a surprisingly big difference to a busy family home is built-in storage.

Instead of school bags, coats, shoes, toys and everything else slowly taking over the house, you can design storage around the space you actually have.

And it doesn’t have to mean a huge project.

As a rough guide, you’re probably looking at:

£1,000–£2,000 for a fairly simple built-in storage solution.

£2,000–£4,000+ for something more bespoke, such as full-height wardrobes, a built-in study area or a larger fitted storage wall.

The final cost will depend heavily on the size, materials, finish and how bespoke you want it to be.

The biggest advantage isn’t just making the room look tidier though.

Good storage is designed around how you actually use the room.

Think about what needs storing, where you naturally drop things when you come through the door, what the kids need access to and what you’d rather keep hidden.

A little planning can make a huge difference to how a room works.

And if you’re renovating anyway, it’s worth thinking about storage before the decorating and finishing stages rather than trying to squeeze it in afterwards.

What would you love to have more storage for in your home?

There’s something satisfying about seeing a bathroom come together from start to finish 😊

Swipe through to see some before & during shots!

What started out as a downstairs WC has been transformed into a fully functioning wet room.

A lot happens between the first strip-out and the finished room. Great work from the whole team — another smooth project from start to finish.

All waste taken care of and, as always, backed by our guarantee. 👌
