🚨 $420,000 fine following serious gate injury

A recent case in Australia is another stark reminder of the consequences of getting gate safety wrong.

A company director have been fined a total of $420,000 after a worker suffered serious injuries when struck by an industrial gate that overran its vertical supports while closing.

The case highlights something we regularly stress at Gate Safe:

Ants, spiders and other insects can find their way into equipment and, in some cases, contribute to faults or affect the operation of the gate.

So if your automated gate starts behaving strangely, take a look at what's happening around the installation.

And remember – don't open electrical equipment or attempt repairs yourself. If you're concerned, contact a suitably trained installer.

A five-year-old boy has tragically died in France after a large sliding gate reportedly fell onto him and his two-year-old brother.

Our thoughts are with the child’s family and everyone affected by this devastating accident.

While we do not yet know what caused this particular gate to fall, incidents like this are a stark reminder that gates are not simply heavy objects – they are moving structures that can cause life-changing or fatal injuries when something goes wrong.

Gates should be assessed for potential risks and regularly checked to ensure they remain safe throughout their working life.

Never assume a gate is safe simply because it has been working without a problem.

The summer holidays give schools something they rarely have during term time - space to deal with the jobs that are harder to tackle when pupils and staff are on site.

And gates should be part of that list.

Automated gates are used every day, often multiple times a day, yet it’s easy for maintenance and safety checks to slip down the priority list.

The quieter weeks are an ideal time to look at your gates with fresh eyes:

🔹 Are all safety devices working correctly?
🔹 Has anything changed around the gate since it was installed?
🔹 Are there signs of wear, damage or deterioration?
🔹 Is the gate being maintained by someone who understands automated gate safety?

Because once the new term begins, there’s a lot less opportunity to take gates out of service.

Use the quieter period to identify the problems before they become a problem.
