We often get calls from clients who make requests and when we say that isn't possible or it will require time or initial steps, they say "but you can just!". Most recently a client said that we could complete a job in two days because she had once done a similar job in two days in a different house. If a tradesperson says a job will take longer, they are doing this for you and your home, not just to take prolong the work. Tall Joiner will always try to work around your schedule and your comfort, but we are not magicians and have to maintain safety for all involved in the process.

If you have ever wondered why tradesfolk carry spray bottles full of water, it is because silicone hardens in the presence of water. It reduces the wait time for silicone curing. It isn't to prevent cats doing quality control checks by sitting in the fresh sealant!

Working today on a custom kitchen worktop. We’re vacuum-infusing the timber with oil to make it far more waterproof – especially around the sink area, where it would normally be at risk of water damage. Little details like this help a beautiful worktop stay that way for years.

Joinery work is based off the work of previous craftspeople. Often in jobs we discover shortcuts previously taken, and these affect the trajectory of our work. For instance this week we learned, once we had removed the cabinets in a kitchen we are remodelling, that the previous workers had not tiled the whole floor. They had spent more time and effort to not tile it, in fact. This meant that we suddenly had to communicate with the client, figure out how to get tiles that suited the decor, and retile a substantial section of their floor. If you have a tradesperson in, make sure if they are not doing certain work, that the reasoning is for your convenience and utility of your space, not theirs.

A customer called us this morning to ask for help in their kitchen. They opened with a question all craftspeople know brings interesting news: “Can you just pop over?”

The “small job” turned out to be a full U-shaped countertop and stove installation… 45 minutes away. That’s 1.5 hours of travel before we even touch a tool.

This is why we always ask for photos first – it helps us give a fair estimate, plan properly, and make sure our time (and yours!) is respected.
