Why you shouldn’t mastic or glue slates onto a roof 🏠

Using mastic, silicone or adhesive to stick roof slates in place might seem like a quick repair, but it isn’t a substitute for properly fixing a slate.

Slates are designed to be mechanically fixed and correctly overlapped so the roof can shed water while coping with wind, temperature changes and natural movement. Gluing a slate can hide the underlying problem rather than fixing it properly.

Over time, adhesive can deteriorate or lose its bond, potentially allowing the slate to slip or become loose. It can also make future repairs more difficult, as removing a glued slate can disturb or damage the surrounding slates.

A proper slate repair should use an appropriate mechanical fixing method for the roof, such as nails, hooks or a suitable slate-repair fixing system, while maintaining the correct headlap and weathering.

A quick blob of mastic might look like a repair — but doing the job properly is what keeps the roof secure and watertight for the long term.

Here we are installing a torch-applied, mineral-finished bituminous cap sheet over the previously installed 2mm bituminous underlay, forming a fully bonded built-up felt roofing system. The cap sheet will be laid with correctly formed side and end laps, fully heat-welded using controlled torch application, with sufficient bitumen bleed-out to all laps to ensure a continuous watertight seal.

Never let anyone pressure wash your roof. High-pressure water can damage roof tiles, strip away protective coatings, loosen pointing and seals, and force water underneath the roofing materials, potentially causing leaks and costly repairs. While pressure washing may make a roof look clean initially, the damage it can cause may significantly shorten its lifespan. Roofs should always be cleaned using special methods designed to remove moss, algae and dirt without damaging the roof.
