🏫 From concept to reality - our urban design experts bring innovative solutions to life. Work on Lairdsland Primary began in the New Year of 2014 and wrapped by mid-2015, with a total project cost in excess of £6m.

Careful attention went into the landscape design to make sure it sat comfortably at the edge of town, next to the historic setting of the Forth & Clyde Canal - a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

Iglu provided Landscape and Visual Appraisal, planning advice, detailed design and on-site implementation throughout.

World Rivers Day is about the rivers that quietly hold whole communities together - and the River Leven is a perfect example. Our River Park masterplan works with its wetlands, woodland and industrial history rather than against them, creating a biodiverse public space that people can actually get to and enjoy, bird hide included. Healthy rivers, healthier places. 🌊

World Car-Free Day is a reminder of what our streets could feel like - quieter, greener, easier to cross with a pram or a bike. Our NCN 76 realignment concept in Dunbar is built around exactly that: taking space back from cars on the busy High Street and handing it to people walking and cycling instead. Small towns, big shift in priorities. 🚲

Today's PARK(ing) Day - the day people across the world turn a single parking space into a park, a garden, a place to sit and chat. It's a small gesture with a big question behind it: what else could our streets be, if they weren't just for cars? That question sits at the heart of everything we do at Iglu Studio. In Dunbar, the National Cycle Network currently squeezes cyclists onto a busy High Street alongside buses, cars and pedestrians - not much fun if you're a nervous cyclist or a parent with kids in tow. Our concept design realigns NCN 76 through quieter parts of town, widening paths and adding proper segregation so cycling feels safe for everyone, not just the confident few. 🚲

What is Active Travel?

Put simply, it's any journey powered fully or partly by you - walking, wheeling, cycling - whatever the reason for travelling. Transport Scotland places these modes right at the top of the transport hierarchy, and that's exactly the thinking behind projects like ours. Prioritising people-powered journeys means healthier communities and better-connected places 🌍🚲🚶

One of the things we're proudest of at Iglu Studio is how we work: staying small and flexible enough to bring in exactly the right specialists for each project - ecologists, animators, artists, fellow landscape architects - rather than forcing every brief through the same fixed team. It means the finished design actually fits the place.

Every project starts the same way for us: we listen. To the client, to the community, to the site itself, before a single line gets drawn. Then we see what's really there, take time to think it through, and only then do we draw. It's a slower way to work, but it's how you end up with places people actually love.
