For our Gifford extension project, there was never any doubt that the kitchen cabinetry would reflect the client’s love of vibrant green tones. The result is a kitchen space full of personality 💚

We’re excited to share a visual of our developing proposals for the main community hall at Coroghon Barn on the Isle of Canna.

Designed as a flexible, multi-purpose space, the hall aims to provide a warm and welcoming environment for both local residents and visitors to the island. The proposals celebrate the character of the existing building while creating a comfortable setting for community gatherings, special events and everyday use.

We look forward to sharing more as the project continues to evolve.

We’re enjoying developing the detailed design for our project transforming the tired Smailholm Church into a vibrant new family home. The project has recently secured its Building Warrant and will soon be ready to start on site.

A public living room on Canna!

We are developing the detailed proposals for a shared kitchen and living space on the Isle of Canna in a new community run bunkhouse.

We cant wait to see this space come to life.

Our principal architect Wil Tunnell has been lecturing this week on the professional exam course at Edinburgh University, and this has been a good opportunity to reflect on our values as a practice. One thing we value highly is people - clients, those who use our buildings, collaborators and colleagues alike.

We feel very lucky to have a fantastic, talented and supportive team of colleagues at WTA. Enjoying our work, the people we work with, and the environment we work in have always been priorities for the practice. We all support each other creatively and logistically and the work we do is all the better for it.

Our practice has grown steadily over the years, and as we approach our third decade we continue to build trust and respect in each other, enjoy each other’s company, and enjoy learning and creating together. It’s a collective endeavour. If one flourishes, we all flourish!

The Colours of Canna 🌈

We have been developing a sensitive colour palette for a community project on the Isle of Canna, drawing inspiration from the island’s landscape. The resulting palette is calm, inviting, and, most importantly, deeply rooted in its place.

Blue waters & skies | green grass fields | dark basalt rock | white and bright yellow lichen | pink wild flowers | sunset hues | brown and orange tones of the sun on distant hills

We’re excited to be attending the RIAS Awards ceremony tonight to celebrate our shortlisted project, Taigh na Coillie. Best of luck to all the other practices and projects shortlisted this year.

Translated as “House of the Wood” is a sustainable home set within the ecologically precious landscape of northwest Sutherland. Nestled in a National Nature Reserve and surrounded by rare, ancient oak woodlands, the house draws its character directly from the environment that inspired it. The building is anchored in its landscape, conceived to feel like a glacial boulder — at once of the land and apart from it. Its design achieves negative embodied carbon and very low-operational demands through a finely detailed timber construction and the thoughtful integration of sustainable building technologies. The result is a quiet, enduring structure that sits comfortably within the wildness of its setting.

Our wonderful clients took this amazing drone photograph of the house. It’s great to see the building settled into its landscape.

We currently have two community bunk house projects on our books and are really enjoying testing interior options in the bunkbed rooms!

We hope to create cosy and welcoming spaces where you can crash out after a long day of hiking in these amazing Scottish landscapes. Other considerations include privacy screening, way-finding, and affordability!

Canna ✨

We were lucky enough to spend 3 days on Canna as part of our ongoing works with the Isle of Canna Community Development Trust on Coroghon Barn.

We cant wait to see this project come to life!
