Trees are hard-workers, using lots of energy in spring and summer, so when wintertime comes around, it's hibernation mode! ❄️💤

Deciduous trees survive winter through dormancy. To prepare for the harsh cold, trees stop growing leaves to preserve moisture and focus on conserving energy instead! ⚡

Dormancy is vital to a tree's lifespan. The tree can protect itself from the winter weather by developing cold hardiness, but also has the time to replace any damaged leaves and grow new ones in time for spring. 🌱

About the webinar:
Ancient and other Veteran trees are the most important trees any of us will ever deal with. And, with an ever-increasing range of threats to trees, the proper identification of and protection for veteran trees is crucial. But with so many definitions and the range of conflicting advice out there, it can be difficult. Join me for a walkthrough of many definitions to come to a reasonable, balanced, practical conclusion about how to properly recognise and categorise veteran trees.

Time to relax and reset is so important. Personally, it's a bit of a busman's holiday for me. But still great to get out and relax...

If only 1 in 3 people who have the opportunity to leave their perennials over winter did so, it would make a huge difference to many many species who struggle over winter in the UK.

It's a small change for us, but a big change for them...

I'm one in three..

WHY LEAVE PERENNIALS STANDING (November–March):

INSECTS:

Hollow stems = wild bees sleeping inside

Seed heads = winter shelter for ladybugs

70% of beneficial insects overwinter in “dead” plants

BIRDS:

Seeds = winter food

Stems = nest material for spring

WINTER BEAUTY:

Frost on seed heads

Rime on grasses

Structure instead of bare soil

WHEN TO CUT:
→ March/April, when temperatures stay above 10°C.
→ By then the insects have emerged.

TIDY GARDEN: 1,000 dead beneficial insects → more pests in summer
NATURAL GARDEN: 1,000 living beneficial insects → fewer pests in summer

Leave your perennials standing — for insects, for birds, for your summer.
