If you have to lift the handle, pull the door towards you, push it shut or wiggle the key just to get it locked, that’s usually a sign that something isn’t quite right.

Late-night call from a young woman in Edinburgh who had accidentally left her keys inside her home.

She had already tried another company advertising a 24-hour locksmith service, but unfortunately they weren’t answering their phone — potentially leaving her stuck outside in a vulnerable situation.

Thankfully, she got through to me.

After reaching the top-floor flat — which felt a bit like climbing Everest with a bag full of locksmith tools 😂 — I was able to get her safely back inside her home in around 10 minutes.

🐈🔐 Cat Locks Out Customer?

The problem? The snib on the night latch had been engaged from inside, preventing her from gaining access with her key.

I arrived around 30 minutes later and, after identifying what had happened, used my letterbox bypass equipment and endoscope to carefully disengage the snib from outside and get her safely back into her home — without damaging the door or lock.

Once inside, I stripped and checked the night latch to make sure a fault hadn't caused the snib to engage itself. Everything was working as it should, so the lock was reassembled and refitted.

🐈🔐 CAT LOCKS OUT CUSTOMER?
At 12:45am on Friday morning, I received a call from a young lady who was understandably a little nervous. She'd arrived home to find that although she had her key, she still couldn't get through the door...
The problem? The snib on the night latch had been engaged from inside, preventing her from gaining access with her key.

I arrived around 30 minutes later and, after identifying what had happened, used my letterbox bypass equipment and endoscope to carefully disengage the snib from outside and get her safely back into her home — without damaging the door or lock.

Once inside, I stripped and checked the night latch to make sure a fault hadn't caused the snib to engage itself. Everything was working as it should, so the lock was reassembled and refitted.

So how did it happen? 🐈

The customer has a young cat and a chain stay close to the door. One possibility is that the chain was still swinging after she left and a curious cat jumped up to investigate, accidentally knocking the snib into the locked position!

We'll probably never know for certain — but thankfully it had a simple ending: customer back inside, no damage to the door and no replacement lock required.

Another late-night callout successfully resolved. 🔑
