Restoration Work on Grade I listed, Ledston Hall ✅

Clarke Heavey's team of stonemasons spent approximately 5 months undertaking restoration works throughout Ledston Hall, a 700-year-old Grade I listed building, including:

• the careful repair and cleaning of over a dozen original fireplaces
• indent repairs to the external ashlar on the main property
• replacement of mullioned and transom windows.

The team also carried out the installation of new sandstone steps and indent repairs to numerous original internal and external staircases. New limestone boundary walls were also erected by our skilled professionals.

What Does A Stonework Survey Cover?

A professional survey goes beyond what’s visible on the surface.

It assesses the condition of the stone, mortar joints, structural movement, and any signs of deterioration.

This helps identify potential issues early and provides a clear plan for any necessary repairs.

A proper survey can save time, money, and unexpected problems down the line.

At Clarke Heavey Stonemasonry, we use a combination of advanced drone technology and mobile access equipment to assist us with all our surveys✅

If your propety needs surveying, drop us a message and we'll see if we can help!

✨Stonework Insights - Why Matching Materials Matters?

In restoration work, using materials that match the original construction is essential.

Different types of stone and mortar behave differently over time.

If mismatched materials are used, it can lead to uneven wear, cracking, or structural issues.

Careful selection ensures repairs blend in visually and perform properly long-term.

When Should Stonework Be Repaired?

Stonework doesn’t fail overnight - there are usually early signs to look out for.

These can include crumbling mortar, visible cracks, loose stone, or signs of damp.

Addressing these issues early can prevent more serious and costly repairs later on.

Regular inspection and maintenance go a long way in protecting your property.

What Is The Problem With Poor Repointing?

Repointing might seem straightforward, but doing it incorrectly can cause serious issues.

Using the wrong mortar or applying it poorly can lead to trapped moisture, weakened joints, and accelerated stone damage.

Good repointing should protect the stone, not harm it.

It’s a job where experience and the right materials really matter.✅

Beautiful Craftsmanship on Rudding Park Gates✅

Rudding Park Gates and Walls is a Grade II listed Regency-style stone gateway in Harrogate, North Yorkshire and marks as an entrance to the Grade I counterpart of Rudding Park House. It is a classic example of traditional wrought iron gates surrounded by ashlar stone and dates back to the early 19th century.

Upon initial inspection, it was evident the stonework was in a state of disrepair, and there were sections of the gateway which were in urgent need of replacement to maintain its structural integrity.

This was a great project for our stonemasonry team as they were able to utilise and showcase their skills in large and intricate detailing, as seen in these beautiful capitals.

Why Stone Needs to Breathe?

Stone is a natural material that absorbs and releases moisture over time.

When breathable materials like lime mortar are used, this process happens naturally without causing damage.

Problems arise when non-breathable materials trap moisture inside the structure, leading to decay, staining, and long-term deterioration.

Understanding how moisture moves through a building is key to maintaining it properly.

Using modern equipment, the Clarke Heavey team were able to remove years of staining and surface damage, bringing the natural beauty of the stone back to life.

The finished result is a much cleaner, brighter fireplace that complements the room and gives it a fresh new look.

If you have a fireplace that’s looking tired or stained, we can help restore it to its former glory.
