You know those little jobs you start thinking, “This’ll only take five minutes”?
Before you know it, it’s three mornings later, the kettle’s been boiled half a dozen times, and there’s three blokes all stood around scratching their heads trying to work out where the missing screw went.

That’s what makes Men in Sheds special.

One lad might be turning bowls on the lathe, another building bird boxes, someone else welding, repairing furniture, or tinkering away on a project they’ve been meaning to finish for years. But truthfully, it’s not really about the projects, fixing things, the metalwork, or the woodwork.

It’s about the laughs, the conversations, the sense of purpose, and knowing there’s always someone there to have a brew with.

For some, it’s a place to learn new skills. For others, it’s simply somewhere to get out of the house and not feel alone. And somehow, whatever’s going on in life feels a little lighter when you’re stood shoulder to shoulder with a good bunch of people.

We could all do with the Denis

Denis first came down to the Shed as a volunteer, just looking for a bit of company, a brew, and somewhere to belong. He was never one for getting stuck into the tools — Denis likes to keep his hands clean and leaves the sawdust to the rest of us — but before long he found his own important role within the Shed.

These days, Denis looks after the accounts for us, and truth be told, he spends half his time chasing me, Ian, making sure I’m up to date with things and keeping me in some kind of order. Denis has worked out I’m not very good with paperwork and office stuff, so he does his best to keep me in check. If there’s a form needing filling in, receipts needing sorting, or something important I’ve forgotten about, chances are Denis already reminded me twice.

But what Denis probably doesn’t realise is just how much he helps beyond the paperwork. This guy keeps my mental health safe in so many ways. Sometimes it’s the quiet check-ins, the steady support, the laugh over a brew, or simply knowing someone reliable is there beside you helping carry the load.

That’s what Men in Sheds is really about. It’s not just woodwork or tools — it’s friendship, purpose, routine, and people looking out for each other without making a fuss about it.

Denis is a massive part of that. We love him to bits, and honestly, we wouldn’t be without him.

Prevention costs less than crisis.
Community support changes lives.

I’ve seen men walk into Men in Shed quiet and unsure — and a few weeks later, I’ve seen them laughing, supporting each other, and rebuilding confidence over a brew.

This isn’t about wood.
It’s about loneliness.
It’s about mental health.
It’s about giving men somewhere to go before things reach breaking point.

Su***de remains one of the biggest killers of men. Too many suffer in silence.

Men in Shed matters.
What happens inside it matters.

If you believe in what we do, please support Men in Sheds — we’re always looking for volunteers to help run sessions and donations to keep it going.

Together, we can make a difference. 💙

Mental Health Awareness Week 💛

Did you know 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem each year? That means most of us know someone who may be struggling.

I’ve learned that small things really do matter:
• Checking in
• Inviting someone along
• Sharing a brew
• Having a proper chat
• Simply being there

At Men in Sheds, we see every day how connection, community and doing things with your hands can support wellbeing and reduce isolation.

This week, let’s celebrate the small actions that make a big difference 💛

Never mind the “strong and silent” nonsense.

Men’s health matters. Full stop.

At Men In Sheds, we bring men together shoulder to shoulder — sharing skills, friendship, support, and a sense of purpose. Sometimes a chat over a brew can make more difference than people realise.

But to keep the Shed going, we need more support from the community — volunteers, helpers, and people willing to give a bit of time to help us keep the doors open for men who need it.
