Top Tip

Before you call an electrician because “the lights have gone,” check:

🔌 You haven’t just tripped a breaker
💡 You haven’t blown a bulb in a weird way that takes out a circuit
🪫 The RCD isn’t off (and if it won’t reset, that’s when you call me)

Save yourself a callout. Or at least feel smug when you do call me and you’ve already checked these first 😂

One thing I wish every homeowner knew: If your sockets or lights flicker when using heavy appliances, it’s not “just one of those things.” It’s a sign of a loose connection, and it’s how fires start.

Worth checking before it costs you more than a new kettle 👌🏻

A little bit of information which may be useful for those considering a big purchase…

Some appliance manufacturers are voiding warranties if things like washing machines or fridges aren’t installed on a dedicated 16A circuit.

It’s not made obvious anywhere and gets buried deep in the small print of the manual or warranty paperwork.

So you could buy a £2,000 fridge, plug it into the kitchen ring like everyone else, and when it breaks, they’ll say the warranty is void because it wasn’t installed to their exact specs.

That’s a proper piss-take.

How about slapping a sticker on the front that says “Dedicated circuit required or no warranty” instead of hiding it in fine print?

For anyone not familiar with electrics, a dedicated circuit means one circuit serving just one appliance. Most UK homes have around five or six circuits; a couple of socket circuits, one or two lighting circuits, and maybe a dedicated circuit for high-power stuff like a cooker or shower.

Now imagine if every single appliance needed its own dedicated circuit. You’d need so many circuits your fuseboard would be bigger than your dining table.

Next time you’re about to make a big appliance purchase, take a quick look at the small print. You might need to weigh up whether it’s cheaper to add a dedicated circuit now, or gamble on replacing it without a warranty later.

I’ve had three callouts this year for tripping RCDs which were caused by water getting into outdoor sockets.
Every one of them looked fine from the outside, but inside they were full of moisture.
Bit of heavy rain, lid not closing properly, or just old gear that’s worn out.

If your garden socket is cracked, loose, or hasn’t shut properly in a while, it’s worth checking.
Better to sort it before it causes a bigger issue and you have to pay a weekend callout because everything keeps tripping.

If you’re unsure drop me a message, I can take a look and replace it if it needs it.

Thinking about a new fuse board but not sure where to start?

Here’s how it works. Straightforward and step-by-step.

Step 1: EICR
This is an Electrical Installation Condition Report.
It’s a full safety check of your electrics. We test the wiring, check the condition of accessories like sockets and switches, and make sure everything is working as it should.
If anything’s degraded or unsafe, it’ll show up here.

Step 2: Are your cables good?
If the wiring and accessories pass the tests, then it makes sense to upgrade the fuse board.
No point fitting a new board onto an installation that’s already faulty or outdated. That’s just asking for problems down the line.

Step 3: The Upgrade
We swap out the old fuse board and install a new consumer unit with modern safety devices.
This will usually include:
• RCDs or RCBOs which protect against electric shock and faults to earth.
• SPDs which protect your system from voltage spikes, including lightning strikes or surges from the grid.
• AFDDs in some cases, which detect arc faults and reduce fire risk.

The benefits?
You get faster, more intelligent protection that covers more faults than older boards ever could.
SPDs and RCDs also help protect your valuable electronics like TVs, routers, gaming consoles and computers. They reduce the chance of damage from surges or faults, which can help extend the lifespan of your gear.

If you’re unsure where you stand or have any questions, just drop me a message.

Bit of an intro for anyone who’s landed on this page wondering who I am.

I’m Lee, and I run ProVolt Electrical Solutions. I’ve been in the trade nearly 20 years. I started with a full electrical apprenticeship, then went on to complete another as a multi-skilled maintenance engineer in the automotive sector. I’ve worked across domestic, commercial and industrial, from rewires to full production line breakdowns.

I take pride in being reliable, honest, and easy to work with. For domestic customers, that means giving solid advice, doing the job to a proper standard, and keeping costs as fair as I can. For industrial clients, it means getting you back up and running with as little downtime as possible, and helping keep things efficient long-term.

If you’ve got something in mind or just need a bit of help, feel free to give me a shout.

“Think we’ll add some lighting now it’s all finished.”

Of course.

Freshly painted walls, brand new stone tiles, everything spotless. Then comes the idea.

To be fair, the LED strip under the handrail was a good shout, just not ideal timing.

Even so, we managed to sort it without making a mess of the place. Using a nearby power source, hiding the cables and using wireless switches, the LED strip can be switched from the top or bottom of the stairs. No chasing, no cables on show, and no need to repaint anything.

Could it have been planned better? Definitely. Did it work out anyway? Absolutely.

If you’re halfway through a job and thinking “might be nice to add…”, give me a shout. There’s usually a way to make it happen.

Thinking About Upgrading Your Fuseboard?

If your fuseboard’s outdated, it’s not just a bit behind the times. It could be putting you at risk. A modern consumer unit gives you better protection, more flexibility, and peace of mind.

Here’s what you’re actually getting:
• RCD and RCBO protection to help prevent electric shock and reduce fire risk
• Better fault detection and isolation. Faults are easier to find and quicker to sort
• Surge protection (SPD) to guard your equipment from voltage spikes, especially during storms
• A neater setup with room to expand. Ideal if you’re planning an EV charger, kitchen upgrade, or outbuilding supply
• Compliance with the latest regs. Especially important for landlords and insurance

There are options to suit every budget. I can install quality, reliable brands that do the job properly or premium setups like Hager if you want the best finish and feel.

Is Your Electrical Safety Up to Scratch?

An EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) isn’t just paperwork, it’s how you find out if your electrics are safe, compliant, and not putting people or property at risk.

Here’s why it’s worth doing:
• Spot faults early - before they become a costly problem or worse, a danger.
• Legal peace of mind - especially if you’re a landlord. It’s not optional.
• Protects your insurance - many insurers ask for a valid report in the event of a claim.
• Keeps things efficient - outdated or overloaded systems cost you in downtime and bills.

It’s a detailed inspection and test of your fixed wiring, not just a quick look. If it’s been over 5 years since your last one (or never), it’s probably time.

Drop me a message if you have any further questions, or would like to book an EICR for your home or business.

Emergency? No Problem.
If something breaks on site and it’s costing time or money, I can help.

I’ve been in maintenance and breakdown roles long enough to know the pressure. When production stops or you’re waiting on a repair to hit deadlines, you don’t want someone who needs to be handheld.

You want someone who can walk in, assess, plan and fix - safely, quickly and properly.

That’s what I do. Keep me in mind.

Have you ever wondered how safe the electrics are in your home or business?

Maybe you’ve had some flickering lights… a tripping breaker… or just that feeling in the back of your mind that something’s not quite right. Or maybe you’ve never had a problem but aren’t quite sure when things were last checked?

An EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) is basically a health check for your electrics. It gives you a clear picture of what’s safe, what needs attention, and what might be a future issue waiting to happen.

It’s not about scaremongering or selling unnecessary work — it’s about peace of mind. Knowing that what’s behind the walls is as safe as it looks on the outside.

If you’re not 100% confident everything’s up to scratch, or you’re just due a check-up, give me a shout and I’ll talk you through it. No pressure, just helpful advice and proper, honest work.

You can drop me a message on WatsApp or Facebook Messenger - whatever’s easiest for you.
