What does a project manager actually do? 📋

From the initial plans through to completion, a project manager keeps every stage of a project moving in the right direction.

At MJB Technical Services, we coordinate everyone involved, including architects, engineers, planning consultants and other specialists. We organise meetings and site visits, ensure consultants have the information they need and keep key deadlines on track.

Our clients also benefit from one main point of contact throughout the project, helping to make the entire process as smooth and stress-free as possible.

What if people could explore your space before they ever stepped through the door?

We’ve recently created an interactive virtual tour for Lifehouse Church, helping them showcase their new venue, reach a wider audience and make the church more accessible to those who may not always be able to attend in person.

The tour will also support Lifehouse’s room and venue hire offering by giving potential customers a ‘try before you buy’ experience. Visitors can explore the available spaces, understand their layout and facilities, and get a genuine feel for the venue before making an enquiry.

A separate digital twin will be used internally to support health and safety, staff training, facilities management and ongoing maintenance, providing the team with an accurate digital record of the building.

Unlike a traditional video, where every viewer follows the same route, an interactive virtual tour puts them in control.

They can move through the building at their own pace, explore the areas most relevant to them and understand how different spaces connect.

For venues, hospitality businesses, education settings and organisations with physical spaces, that can make it much easier to showcase what you have to offer before someone visits in person.

Could an interactive tour help people better understand your space?

Helping shape the next chapter for Spout House.

This Grade II listed building was severely damaged by a devastating fire, leaving an important part of its history and character at risk.

MJB Technical Services are now preparing a comprehensive planning application, which is due to be submitted to the local authority by the end of September.

As part of this process, we are reviewing photographs of Spout House before the fire alongside images from our recent site visit. These records will help us understand the building’s original appearance, identify important historic features and carefully consider the remaining fabric.

Working with a fire-damaged listed building requires detailed research, sensitive planning and a clear understanding of what made the building significant.

We look forward to sharing more as the proposals develop.

One opportunity can completely change the direction of your career.

Bronwyn, our Operations Manager at MJB Tech, shares the best advice she has received during her time in construction: never be afraid to ask questions.

Construction is an industry where there is always something new to learn, and every project brings a different challenge, lesson or opportunity.

Her advice to anyone starting out is simple: say yes to opportunities. You never know which experience could shape your career or where it might lead.

What advice would you give to someone starting out in construction?

What would we lose if this building disappeared tomorrow?

That is one of the most important questions to ask when considering whether a building is worth preserving.

Its value may come from architectural interest, historical significance, rarity, group value, craftsmanship or the role it plays within the local community.

At MJB Tech, we believe preservation begins with understanding what makes a building meaningful. If losing it would mean losing history, character or an important part of a place, then it deserves careful consideration.

Good heritage design is not about preventing change. It is about managing change in a way that respects what makes the building special.

Through the eyes of an architectural designer 👀…

A construction site is more than bricks, beams and unfinished spaces. Every corner reveals the layouts, details and decisions first developed on the drawing board.

Site visits allow us to see those ideas taking shape, review materials and refine the final details as the project progresses.

This is where careful planning meets construction, and a vision begins to become reality.

Owning a Grade II listed building means protecting far more than just the exterior 🏛️

A common misconception is that listing only applies to the outside of a property. In reality, protection will usually cover the entire building, including internal features, layouts and architectural details that contribute to its significance.

When working with a listed building, some of the biggest considerations are:

✔️ Understanding which features make the building historically important
✔️ Managing expectations around what can and cannot be changed
✔️ Choosing appropriate materials and specialist repair methods
✔️ Preparing for the additional costs involved in heritage work

Repairing and adapting a historic property can be costly, but these measures are often essential to preserve its character and ensure it can be appreciated for generations to come.

A successful heritage project begins with careful planning, realistic expectations and respect for the building’s story.

From a tired bungalow to a bespoke family home designed around countryside living. 🏡

Set in Pleasley, between Mansfield and Chesterfield, this project began with an existing bungalow, several extensions and a collection of outbuildings. MJB Technical Services was appointed to provide the full architectural design service, including planning permission, Building Regulations compliance and ongoing site support.

The redevelopment involved:

✔️ Demolishing the existing dwelling and outbuildings
✔️ Designing a bespoke detached family home
✔️ Creating a four-car garage
✔️ Maximising the surrounding rural views
✔️ Introducing modern living spaces and improved energy efficiency

Careful consideration was given to the scale, appearance and position of the new home, ensuring it complemented the landscape while delivering everything the client needed for modern family life.

From the first concept through to completion on site, the result is a high-quality home that feels completely personal to its owners and perfectly suited to its countryside setting.
