🏗️ DAY 3 — TIME TO GET THE BEAMS CONNECTED! 👊

Another day on the ATC Youth Scaffolding Programme, and we’re stepping things up a gear!

Today’s plan is to get the beams connected up and, hopefully, get the boys working on them under close supervision.

We’re gradually introducing new challenges, building on everything they’ve learned so far and giving them the confidence to tackle something different.

There’s only so much you can learn by watching someone else do it.

GET INVOLVED. GET HANDS-ON. LEARN THE TRADE. 💪

THERE’S NEVER BEEN A SCAFFOLDER WALK THIS EARTH WHO HASN’T THROWN A FITTING INTO A BUCKET! 🤣

A little bit of light-hearted fun with the youngsters on the ATC Youth Training Programme.

We’re teaching them real-life skills, discipline, responsibility and how to work safely.

But we’re also letting them enjoy themselves!

Not every minute needs to be a classroom lesson. Sometimes having a laugh and building relationships is just as important.

🏗️ KEYBOARD JOCKEYS VS REAL-LIFE ACTION 👊

There are plenty of people out there who are quick to sit behind a keyboard, criticise and tell everyone else what they should be doing.

But how many are actually getting out there and DOING SOMETHING?

It’s easy to judge from the comfort of your own home, especially when you’ve perhaps had opportunities that others haven’t.

Some of these youngsters face challenges that many people will never understand.

I’m not claiming to change the world.

I’m simply giving these kids an opportunity to learn practical skills, develop a work ethic, build confidence and hopefully steer some of them away from making choices that could negatively affect their futures.

Not every youngster needs saving. Some just need an opportunity to discover what they’re capable of.

You can keep typing.

🏗️ NOW THIS IS REAL-LIFE EXPERIENCE 👊

A massive thank you to Bradley at Nolan Transport for giving the youngsters on our programme another opportunity.

Bradley is having work done on his own house and he’s agreed to let the boys come along and scaffold it as a REAL live project — obviously with the correct supervision throughout.

Training in the yard is important, but getting them onto a genuine project where they have to think, communicate and put everything they’ve learned into practice takes it to another level.

This is exactly what we wanted this programme to become.

Not just teaching them how to scaffold…

Giving them REAL experience and REAL opportunities. ❤️🏗️

Big respect to Bradley for trusting the youngsters and continuing to support what we’re trying to achieve. 👏

😂🏗️ NEW RULE ON THE JOB…

DROP A TUBE = BURPEES! 💪😂

A little bit of light-hearted fun with the boys on the youth programme.

They’re learning how to handle the materials properly, work safely and look after the equipment — but there’s no reason we can’t have a laugh while doing it.

Funny how quickly nobody drops a tube when burpees are involved. 😂😂

Work hard. Learn properly. Enjoy yourself.

That’s the environment we want for these youngsters. 👊🏗️

🏗️ SOMETIMES YOU NEED TO FEEL THE DIFFERENCE 👊

Today we taught the boys a little differently.

We let them try a task in TWO ways — first demonstrating the incorrect method, then the correct and safe method under supervision.

Why?

Because I don’t just want them remembering someone saying, “Do it like this.”

I want them to understand WHY.

When they can recognise for themselves which method feels controlled, stable and safe — and why the other method creates unnecessary risk — the lesson sticks.

We’re not teaching them to blindly follow instructions.

We’re teaching them to THINK about what they’re doing, understand the risks and make the safe choice every time. 🧠🏗️

🏗️ FIRST DAY COMPLETE 👊

That’s the first full day of the ATC Youth Scaffolding Programme done — and overall, a really productive day.

The youngsters got stuck in, listened, learned and most importantly… THEY ENJOYED IT. ❤️

That’s the biggest thing for me.

If we can get these kids enjoying themselves while learning practical skills, safety, teamwork, responsibility and a proper work ethic, then we’re achieving exactly what we set out to do.

Plenty learned today — by them AND probably by us. 😂

Day one done. Now we build from here. 🏗️💪

🏗️ ACCOUNTABILITY IS EVERYTHING 👊

One of the boys accidentally put a scaffold tube through a car window today. 😬

Was I happy about the window? Obviously not. 😂

But accidents happen. What matters to me is what happens NEXT.

He owned up to it straight away — and that’s a lesson worth far more than pretending it didn’t happen or hoping nobody notices.

We can replace a window.

What we’re trying to teach these youngsters is ACCOUNTABILITY.



If you make a mistake, own it.
Tell the truth.
Put it right.
Learn from it.

And that applies when you eventually work on customers’ properties too. If something gets damaged, you don’t hide it. You tell the customer, take responsibility and get it sorted properly.

We’re not just teaching these boys how to scaffold.

We’re teaching them how to conduct themselves in the real world. 👊🏗️

🏗️ AWARENESS KEEPS YOU SAFE 👊

Another lesson with the boys — learning to work safely and ALWAYS be aware of what’s happening around you.

On a scaffold, it’s not enough to just concentrate on what YOU are doing.

Where are your mates?
What’s above you?
What’s below you?
Where is the material moving?

Getting youngsters into these habits from the very beginning is what this programme is all about.

SKILL is important. AWARENESS is just as important. 🏗️💪

🏗️ COMMUNICATION IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS THE ROPE 👊

Next lesson for the boys — safely pulling materials up on the rope.

But this isn’t just about learning how to tie material on and pull it up.

It’s about COMMUNICATION.

When the person above takes control of the material, they need to clearly let the person below know they’ve got it safely BEFORE anything is released.

No guessing. No assuming.

Clear communication between scaffolders prevents accidents and keeps everyone working safely.

Another basic skill that needs to become second nature from DAY ONE. 🏗️💪
