Dealing with heavy weathering.

Typical conservation jointing. When rot has had its way, restoration needs to put strength back into the sashes. If the stiles have rotted, I use a butt joint on the moulding, which meets a 30deg scarf, lapped into the stile. The 30deg gives more surface contact and allows for a little seasonal movement. This Queen Anne sash needs a bottom rail replacement and a single stile conservation joint.

Bowden House, old rotted sill removed and new Accoya replacement. Upon removal of the old sills i found they had been bedded onto putty. This made absolute sense to me, as it would allow the wood to breathe, as putty does with windows ultimately. Also offers some feeding of the wood. The putty was hand made form finest chalk and boiled linseed oil, made much wetter than glazing putty. Before fitting the porous sub sill was 'wet dressed' with boron solution and allowed to dry.

Internal and external cradles.

This top sash needed very involved work. The meeting rail had to be carefully replaced and a couple of the glazing bars had to be cut, extended and re-tenoned into place.
