The rose garden! 🌹This beautiful border has been undergoing gradual transformation over the last year, along with the adjacent herbaceous border. An enormous blob of a Portuguese laurel shrub got the chop, rescuing the original rose planting from excessive shade, and a gorgeous selection of new roses added, along with new Hidcote lavenders to complete the border.
As always, my favourite bit of the job was adding barrowfuls of homemade leaf mould to improve the soil texture in late winter....so satisfying 🧡

🪴 A happy corner of my mum's garden, performing splendidly after planting up last year with ferns and Heucheras. It's always been a spot where the grass didn't grow so well, being pretty shady, so I decided to plant up with these lovely shade-tolerant perennials to brighten up the space and they are really doing the trick!! ✨Also pictured is the rose that's been hiding behind the shed not doing much for years - pruned and trained this winter, it's now looking very floriferous indeed🌹

Whatta beauty!! Another pruning success - this winter I made sure to get as many curves and diagonals into the structure of this rose, to encourage lots of flowering side shoots. This also creates a more interesting winter structure! It's now covered in blooms and doing exactly what it's there to do 🌸

✨💜🪻A fairly picture-perfect Wisteria in all its splendour, responding well to a significant prune this winter! A large Clematis armandii was removed as it was competing too much with the Wisteria in too small a space - and the Wisteria itself brought down to a more sensible height to prevent naughty tendrils tangling themselves in the gutter and roof.

🌞 A day on the farm!! 🐐 Last week I had the immense pleasure of spending some time at , delivering a talk with my good pal for a group of the volunteers and staff at the farm. We discussed all the myriad ways that we can support wildlife through gardening in an urban context - and we saw many of those examples already in place at the farm, from the dead-hedges around the boundaries, to the SUDS (sustainable urban drainage systems) in place next to the cafe, channeling rainwater from gutter pipes straight into a planter. Love it!! Thanks for having us Windmill Hill 🤠

🌞 Spring is certainly spronging!! You can smell it in the air and see it in the sunshine, and what a relief it is. March is shaping up to be a very busy month in a lot of very lovely gardens... 🤠

So many lovely things happening!! Tree peonies budding, Hellebores flowering, Sarcococca smelling quite glorious...
A quince tree needed some serious attention, being very tangled and overcrowded - a bough or two removed for now.
It feels so exciting to see new growth starting - new shoots sprouting on roses, I even saw some Echinops seeds germinating on the seed head. Lots of snowdrops, more Sarcococca, evergreen foliage looking gorgeous in the glimpse of sunshine we've had this week.
Lots of wood waste in one garden, which I made a start on chipping this week - once it's rotted down a bit it will be a great help for mulching and improving some heavy clay soil in the garden.
And finally, training a rose at my mum's house - it's been growing down the side of the shed without much attention, so today I got round to putting up some wires to train it, so this year it should be a happy sight from the roadside.🌹
Here's to spring hinting at its arrival around the corner, and maybe a bit more sunshine soon??! 🌦️
