Ofgem announced the new price cap this morning. From October, gas bills go up by 8%, while electricity bills stay much the same. That is partly because the Government has removed VAT from electricity, which has offset almost all of the increase on that side. People on heat pumps will not feel this price cap increase as much as those on gas.

Gas is bought and sold on international markets, so when prices rise abroad, households here pay more a few months later. There is nothing an individual homeowner can do about that.

Considering sash windows for your home? Here’s a trick that makes them worth it.

Open the top sash slightly as well as the bottom. Warm air escapes through the top gap while cooler air comes in at the bottom, creating a gentle flow through the room without a draught.

One thing to watch in this hot weather: keep windows closed during the day while it’s warmer outside than in. Wait until the evening or early morning when the outside air has cooled down, then open up and let that cooler air move through the house.

Turns out the Victorians knew a thing or two about staying cool!
