Unitary Engineering was formed in 1985 as Building Services Contractors and have successfully established a niche within the industry, offering a professional reliable service to a many and varied client base. ervices, from outline schemes and budget prices to handing over turnkey installations. Our engineers are trained and equipped to efficiently carry out the installation, site supervision and monitoring of working standards ensure high quality of installations. We believe in the development of long term business relationships and pride ourselves on the ability to offer a wide range of services from a single point of contact. Following on from the schools update earlier this week, here is a closer look at one of the projects currently underway.

The team is mid-way through a complete plant room replacement at a school as part of its summer improvement programme. The existing boilers, pipework and pressurisation units are out. A new energy-efficient heating system is going in.

One element worth highlighting is the pipework extension connecting a separate area of the school that previously ran off its own standalone boiler. Once complete, the site will have a single centralised heating system that is simpler to manage, easier to maintain, and more efficient to run day-to-day.

Six weeks sounds like a reasonable window until you are in it. The planning that goes into meeting a September deadline without cutting corners is considerable, and the team on-site has been excellent.

The first gantry is in at First Bus Norwich.

Groundworks complete, concrete down, and now the infrastructure supporting the depot's EV charging network is taking shape above ground. This is the point at which the scale of the project becomes visible.

As main contractor, UES is managing the full programme on site. More to follow.

When a client appoints a main contractor, they're making one decision instead of many.

One point of contact, one programme, one team accountable for the full scope, whether that's groundworks, electrical, mechanical, fit-out, or all of the above.

It's a different level of responsibility from subcontracting into a project. The coordination, the sequencing, the risk sits with you.

We've been delivering at this level across a range of sectors and project types for a while now.

At Larkmead School in Oxfordshire, a flood left the entire heating and hot water infrastructure inoperable. We managed the full scope: a new classroom built to keep students learning during works, a complete overhaul of the heating and water distribution network, a new steel-framed plant room housing four high-efficiency condensing boilers and a BMS, electrical rerouting, and redecoration across large sections of the school. £1.2M, delivered on time and within budget.

At First Bus Taunton, we delivered £1.7M of depot electrification infrastructure across five disciplines, enabling 26 electric buses to operate from a single site. We're now on site in Norwich doing it again.

Two very different projects. Same principle. One team with full accountability and no gaps.

Concrete slab going in at First Bus Norwich.

This aerial shot from last week shows the pump truck and mixers on site as we lay the foundation for the next phase of the depot's electrification infrastructure. The gantries follow shortly.

For anyone who followed our work at First Bus Taunton, this is the same programme – zero-emission depot infrastructure supporting First Bus's commitment to a fully electric fleet by 2035.

As main contractor, UES is managing the full scope on site. More to follow as the project develops.

Last week, we were on site at Bristol Cathedral draining the South Range heating system and carefully removing radiators ahead of wider works, with reinstatement planned before winter.

A relatively simple job on paper. In practice, working inside a building that has stood for nearly nine hundred years never feels routine.

Bristol Cathedral is a long-standing client of ours. Earlier this year, we completed the mechanical and electrical installation for the new Cathedral Café, part of a broader transformation of the 1960s refectory built over 12th-century remains. A privilege to be part of a project team bringing that space back to life.

Being trusted with a building like this, across multiple projects and over many years, is something we do not take for granted. The required standards, the care for the building's fabric, and the awareness of what you are working inside.

First Bus Norwich – groundworks progressing.

The concrete slab goes down by the end of next week. Gantries follow at the end of the month.

This is still the early stage of another depot electrification project for First Bus, as they continue rolling out zero-emission infrastructure across their UK network. It looks like a building site right now. That's because it is. By the time we're done, it'll be ready to charge the next generation of electric buses.

A question we get asked more than almost any other right now: should we switch from gas to a heat pump?

The honest answer is: it depends. And anyone who tells you otherwise before seeing your building is selling, not advising.

Here is what we know from delivering commercial heat pump installations across multiple sectors.

The carbon case is strong. The cost case is more nuanced. Running costs depend on your existing system efficiency, your electricity tariff, and the building's insulation. We always say so upfront, because a client who makes a decision based on inflated promises is a client with a problem six months later.

What makes the switch worthwhile right now is carbon. Gas combustion produces direct emissions at point of use. A well-specified heat pump running on an increasingly renewable grid makes a material difference to your operational carbon footprint, particularly when paired with solar PV.
