Sedum spectabile ‘Autumn Joy’ or Hylotelephium x mottramianum ‘Herbstfreude’. For such a robust, unassuming plant, it certainly collects names! I love its fleshy green summer leaves and the tight green bud flower heads. The flowers in my garden are just beginning to pink up so it won’t be long before these are a deep pink. Ironically, I’m not a fan of this plant when it is ‘in the pink’, but the pollinators love it! My favourite moment is in the winter when the seedheads stand tall with a sprinkling of frost. Is it just me?

Before: a garden with no purpose. Just a concrete path to the shed and nowhere to sit or entertain.

My clients were frustrated. There was nowhere to sit, nowhere to entertain, a sloped garden that didn’t work for them, and a very ugly raised manhole cover.

The brief: a level dining terrace near the house, a small seating area at the rear to catch the last of the sun, and a raised bed for edibles and annuals.

The solution: we turned the garden at a 45 degree angle to the house to make the most of the available space. This created a generous level terrace, deeper planting borders and a layout that feels inviting rather than restrictive.

Stone setts within the paving highlight the angle and add subtle detail. A small seating area at the back now catches the last of the evening sun (perfect for a cheeky G&T), while generous steps and a clear pathway encourage you to explore.

This is now a garden you can walk all the way around to explore and stay curious. With four different seating areas, it offers space to relax, socialise and enjoy the outdoors from morning to evening.

And that ugly raised manhole? Lowered and transformed into a hidden recessed drain within the paving. Win win … or should I say chin-chin?

In the height of summer, foxgloves begin to go to seed. This serves as a gentle reminder of how gardens can support us during times of grief, change, and uncertainty. Change is natural, and new beginnings often arise from things ending.

The seasons will change, and if you currently feel lost, you will find yourself again. Nature reminds us of resilience, quiet strength and soft moments. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, I encourage you to step outside, shut out the noise, feel the warmth of the sun and reconnect with nature.

The planting in the Stoke Gifford front garden, complete with its’ secret driveway, is now in its third year and the planting pockets are beautifully full.

Pollinator friendly plants run throughout the garden and they are buzzing with approval. Bees and insects have been laying eggs in the bee posts, and a local woodpecker has even taken an interest in one of the oak posts.

The tall ornamental grasses and seedheads will be left standing over winter to support insects and birds.

A garden that sits beautifully in its surroundings doesn’t happen by chance, it happens by design.
