It was wonderful to catch up with my lovely clients and see how their garden has grown!

It is still full of colour and interest in October, with some highlights, like the bright orange of the Cornus sanguinea 'Midwinter Fire' stems, still to come.

Looking at the world in a different way.

Sometimes, when you're designing, you get blocked. Nothing seems to work, everything is jarring and you feel fed up.

My tutor at design school said that was the time to look in a different way - turn the paper upside down, for example. Sometimes, something that simple is enough to reinspire you.

This photo is from inside a hollow tree stump. It made me think of dealing with tricky projects as it's looking at something from an unusual angle, allowing you to see the blue sky ahead.

I love every season, but what I love most is noticing the changes week to week. The rain that eventually came has caused a beautiful bloom in the fungi, with such amazing forms and colours.

The trees seem confused though, as so many have dropped leaves already, in a desperate bid to survive the heatwaves. It's interesting to see what the autumn will bring.

Dipsacus fullonum, or the teasel, looks beautiful against the late summer sky.

Bees and other pollinators love the flowers, but in winter it comes into its own. The striking seed heads add texture and contrast, whilst also providing forage for red-faced goldfinches and other birds.

Easily grown from seed, this biennial deserves a place in your garden.

Gardens are all about renewal - new life coming from the death of others.

That's why it's so important to keep a variety dead material in your garden, especially as we head into the colder months. Upright wood and stems support different organisms than cut down material, so leave 'tidying up' until the spring.

Pilosella aurantiaca is one of my favourite 'weeds'. It grows in my rather unkempt, but pollinator-friendly lawn and I love the burst of hot colour.

Known as Fox and Cubs as the buds cluster around a central flower and obviously it's colour!
