Last Friday we had the pleasure of attending the launch event for a fantastic STEM project at Mulberry Academy Hastings.
The project, delivered through STEM on Track by Aspire Education, challenged students to build a go-kart from scratch using a kit supplied through the programme. The school funded as much of the project as possible and then reached out to local businesses for additional support, whether through sponsorship, materials, or practical assistance. We were delighted to be able to contribute and help make the project happen.
For us, this project is particularly close to home. Our daughter is involved and, like many young people, learns best through hands-on practical experiences. Traditional classroom learning isn't always where she shines, but give her the opportunity to build, create and problem-solve, and her enthusiasm is incredible to see.
As a family business, we also understand this from personal experience. Ian, one of the Directors at GBS Welding Ltd, is dyslexic and often says that opportunities like this would have made a huge difference when he was at school. Too often, practical learners can feel overlooked when their talents lie outside of conventional academic subjects. Projects like this help young people discover skills, confidence and career paths they may never have considered otherwise.
What really stood out at the launch event was hearing the students talk about what they had achieved and seeing the pride they had in their work. The confidence, teamwork, problem-solving and engineering skills they have gained are every bit as valuable as the finished go-kart itself.
We would like to thank Mulberry Academy Hastings, specifically Joe and the other teachers that put a lot of their own time and effort into this, Aspire Education and everyone involved in making this project possible. It's a brilliant example of what can be achieved when schools, local businesses and communities work together to invest in the next generation.
At GBS Welding Ltd, we are proud to have played a small part in supporting a project that inspires young people to learn by doing.
