"It's never just been about selling an insurance policy. It's about raising the standard of the practitioner."

That's Eddie Ho**er, founder and CEO of Hamilton Fraser, on one of the proudest moments of his 30 years in the sector.

The formation of the JCCP (Joint Council for Cosmetic Practitioners) was a milestone the industry had needed for a long time. Formalised regulation. A serious effort to raise standards around training, competence and accountability. Being approached from day one to help set it up mattered to Eddie personally, because it recognised what Hamilton Fraser had been trying to do since 1996.

Regulation across the sector is still evolving. But the JCCP represented a real moment where the whole industry started pulling in the same direction.

An interesting fact from Eddie Ho**er, founder and CEO of Hamilton Fraser:

"Around 60% of the costs paid out on a claim go towards defending the practitioner. Not to the patient."

Claims frequency has grown over the past 30 years. But claim severity hasn't. What's really driving up the cost of every claim we see is legal costs. The cost of defending a claim has risen sharply over three decades, and that's why access to a specialist claims team matters so much. Not just for the outcome, but for the cost of getting there.

"Practitioner standards haven't dropped. In fact, they've improved."

That's Eddie Ho**er, founder and CEO of Hamilton Fraser, on how claims have really changed since 1996.

Back then, treatments were kept quiet. Awareness was low. Claims were rare, and often unsophisticated. Today, patients arrive with better information, more expectations and access to AI tools that help them draft claims that read like a lawyer wrote them.

Eddie's clear-eyed view is that clinic standards have improved over three decades. What has really changed is the ease of complaining, the confidence patients feel to do so, and the increasingly professional way those complaints are constructed.

"The market is shifting at such a pace. We're trying to catch up rather than lead."

That's Eddie Ho**er, founder and CEO of Hamilton Fraser, on the treatments currently hardest to insure.

The honest answer is fat dissolving and weight loss. New treatments. Limited safety data. Claims that may not surface until years down the line. Insurers are cautious until more evidence emerges. HF insures some fat dissolving treatments and some weight loss procedures, but the risk profile is genuinely different to what the sector was underwriting even five years ago.

The wider shift is bigger than any single treatment. Aesthetics is moving from toxins and fillers into broader health, wellness and skincare territory. And insurance is scrambling to catch up.

"Most treatments, we'll actually provide some form of cover."

That's Eddie Ho**er, founder and CEO of Hamilton Fraser, on what HF will and won't insure.

Very few treatments are automatically off the table. Most can be covered in some form, whether that's limited cover, higher excess or specific criteria around who can perform them. When botulinum toxin first emerged, HF only insured nurses, surgeons and doctors. As the dental market matured, dentists were added. Criteria relax over time as claims data builds up.

Where Eddie draws a firm line is with non-medics. And it isn't about injecting skill. "It's about what happens when something goes wrong, and whether they're trained to spot it and deal with it quickly."

"Marketing to men... it's an untapped market." ๐Ÿ’ฌโ €โ €

Charlotte Body, founder of the Health Assembly, joins hosts Vicky Eldridge and Eddie Ho**er to share how aesthetic clinics can unlock massive growth during tough economic times by targeting the male demographic.

Once male clients overcome the initial stigma of entering an aesthetic clinic, they become incredibly loyal, long-standing patients. Clinics missing this shift are leaving a highly lucrative, un-tapped market completely untouched.โ €โ €

"Sometimes you just have to take a gamble."

That's Eddie Ho**er, founder and CEO of Hamilton Fraser, on the challenge of insuring a treatment that has no claims history to work from.

Every new treatment reaching the UK market started somewhere. And someone had to be the first insurer to underwrite it. Eddie's approach hasn't changed much in 30 years. Investigate the treatment. Talk to the marketplace. Talk to practitioners already using it. Look at the manufacturer's fact sheets, trials and CE marking.

Sometimes there isn't enough data. And you have to make an underwriting call. As Eddie puts it: "If we were only going to insure treatments that never ended up with a problem, you wouldn't need insurance at all."

"Don't treat patients like a conveyor belt or a sausage factory."

That's Eddie Ho**er, founder and CEO of Hamilton Fraser, on the one thing every practitioner should do more of.

For Eddie, it's spending real, quality time with the patient before and after the treatment. Understanding what they're looking for. Checking in properly on how they feel afterwards. Keeping the conversation open, honest and ongoing.

Because once a patient becomes unhappy, every subsequent interaction is harder. If you haven't invested in the aftercare, you exasperate any potential problem rather than resolve it. The advice sounds simple. It's also, in Eddie's experience, one of the biggest differences between clinics that see very few claims and clinics that see them regularly.
